Harvard separated itself from Princeton on Day 2, moving into the lead by 12.5 points headed into Friday morning’s prelims session. We will see heats of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back, followed by the preliminary round of 3-meter diving. The 1000 free distance event, which the Ivy women discontinued this year but the men still swim, will begin at 4:30 PM Eastern.

Defending champions Umit Gures of Harvard and Raunak Khosla of Princeton are top seeds in the 100 fly and 400 IM respectively, while last night’s Ivy meet record-breaker Noah Millard of Yale leads the field in the 200 free. Penn’s Matt Fallon, the 2022 runner-up to Columbia’s Demirkan Demir, comes in with the fastest time in the 100 breast, and defending champion Gunner Grant of Harvard is top seed in the 100 back.

Kicking off the Friday morning prelims session was Princeton’s Max Kreidl, who dropped 2.9 seconds to win heat 1 of the 100 fly in 47.66 ahead of Yale’s Lucius Brown, who improved his seed time by 2.5 seconds (48.11).

In heat 2, Harvard’s Anthony Rincon was out front at the 50 but Penn’s Benjamin Feldman and Andrew Dai came from behind to take first and second. Feldman went 47.10 for the win, while Dai edged Rincon, 47.61 to 47.67.

Aayush Deshpande of Harvard went .7 better than his entry time to win heat 3 ahead of Yale’s Connor Lee (46.66) and Princeton’s Conor McKenna (47.02) with 46.52. McKenna dropped 1.4 seconds, and came from sixth at the halfway mark, to take third from lane 7.

Defending champion Umit Gures of Harvard took the final heat by .03 over Princeton’s Nicholas Lim, 46.36 to 46.39. Brian Lee of Columbia was third with 46.89.

Men’s 400 Individual Medley – Prelims

Brown’s Lukas Scheidl came from behind over the last 50 yards to win a hotly-contested heat 1 of the 400 IM in 3:48.82, beating Cornell’s Jack Valiquette (3:49.48) and Princeton’s Hunter Kim (3:51.28). Scheidl had led after the backstroke but Valiquette took over after the first 50 of the breaststroke and held on through the 350. Scheidl came home in 25.7 to Valiquette’s 27.1, taking the win.

Heat 2 was a battle in the middle two lanes, as Penn’s Jason Schreiber and Princeton’s Lucas Strobek traded leads. Schreiber began with the fastest fly, while Strobek took over on the back. Schreiber went out front again on the breast, but Strobek came home almost two seconds faster on the freestyle leg to get the win, 3:47.53 to 3:48.04. Brown’s Max Hardart passed Penn’s Daniel Gallagher over the last 100 yards to take third (3:50.44).

Defending champion Raunak Khosla of Princeton cruised to a 3:44.75 victory in the final heat, while behind him a good race was going on for second and third places. Kevin Keil of Penn and Stanford Li of Columbia traded leads on the backstroke and breaststroke, but Princeton’s Peyton Werner crushed the final 100 to overtake Li for third place in the heat with 3:49.23. Keil went 3:47.91 to take second.

Men’s 200 Freestyle – Prelims

Yale’s Joe Page, who placed seventh in this event last year, took the first circle-seeded heat in 1:35.14, ahead of Princeton’s Max Walther (1:35.25) and Harvard’s David Greeley (1:35.84). Princeton’s Billy Swartwout ran a close fourth (1:36.23), dropping 1.4 seconds from his seed time and nearly running down Greeley on the second half.

The next heat featured a 1-2 finish from Princeton’s Mitchell Schott (1:33.93) and Lucas Tudoras (1:35.88). Harvard’s Harris Durham went 1:36.34 for third place.

Top-seeded Noah Millard of Yale took the final heat in 1:33.02. He and Harvard’s Ben Littlejohn traded stroke for stroke over the first 150 yards, but Millard put his feet in on the final 50 yards to win by half a body length. Harvard’s Marcus Holmquist took third (1:35.38).

Men’s 100 Breaststroke – Prelims

Defending champion Demirkan Demir of Columbia broke the pool record in the first circle-seeded heat, going 52.44 to beat Cornell’s Jacob Bass (53.42) and Princeton’s Josh Brown (53.47) and Kael Mlinek (54.08).

In the very next heat, Brown’s Jack Kelly went 52.08 to lower Demir’s new pool record by .36. Behind him, Yale’s Alexander Hazlett touched out Cornell’s Sebastian Wolff, 53.39 to 53.44, for second.

Columbia’s Michael Chang led from start to finish in the final heat, while top-seeded Matthew Fallon of Penn came from third place at the 50 to overcome Harvard’s Jared Simpson for second place, 52.93 to 53.18.

2022 bronze medalist Anthony Rincon of Harvard beat Penn’s Mark McCrary (47.44) and Cornell’s Paige daCosta (47.59) with 47.21 in a very close first circle-seeded heat. daCosta won this event in 2020.

Fired up from his butterfly earlier, Harvard’s Deshpande (47.17) dropped .7 to win the next heat ahead of Princeton’s Brett Feyerick and Columbia’s Isaac Beers, who tied with 47.55.

Top-seeded Gunnar Grant, the defending champion from Harvard, took the final heat in 46.29. In his wake were Penn’s Jack Hamilton (47.67) and Yale’s Greg Kalin (47.99).
