2023 Mare Nostrum – Canet: Day 2 Prelims Recap

2023 MARE NOSTRUM CANET

The second day of the 2023 Mare Nostrum – Canet has kicked off. In this morning’s prelims session, American star Michael Andrew led the way in the men’s 50 breast with a 27.52, establishing the top time of the morning by 0.15 seconds. Andrew is the American Record holder in the event with his lifetime best of 26.52.

There were a handful of excellent swims in the women’s 50 breast prelims this morning as well. Great Britain’s Imogen Clark led the way, swimming a speedy 30.33. That swim comes in just 0.31 seconds off Clark’s British Record mark of 30.02, which she swam last summer. South Africa’s Lara van Niekerk was the next-fastest this morning, clocking a 30.54. Poland’s Dominika Sztandera was right there as well, swimming a 30.70 for third.

The men’s 50 fly is looking like it will be a tour de force tonight in finals, as it features many of the fastest men in the world in the event. Hungarian Szebastian Szabo was the fastest performer this morning, touching in 23.50, while Nyls Korstanje (Netherlands) was right behind with a 23.64. Dylan Carter, representing Trinidad and Tobago, was right there as well, swimming a 23.73 for the third seed in tonight’s final.

Japan’s Rikako Ikee claimed the top seed for tonight’s final in the women’s 50 fly, swimming a 25.82 to beat out World Record holder Sarah Sjostrom (Sweden), who came in third this morning at 26.06. Maaike de Waard (Netherlands) was second this morning with a 26.00. Of note, we can expect that Sjostrom will be significantly faster tonight in the final, given she swam a very fast 24.02 to win the women’s 50 free last night.

Poland’s Krzysztof Chmielewski had a great swim in the men’s 200 fly this morning, leading the field with a 1:55.80. He’ll have the likes of Japan’s Tomoro Honda to push him tonight in the final, so that race should develop into a thrilling one to watch.

France’s Maxime Grousset beat Dylan Carter in the men’s 100 free by 0.01 seconds this morning, taking the top seed for tonight’s final with a time of 49.26.

The women’s 100 free is also shaping up to be an excellent race. Siobhan Haughey (Hong Kong) was the fastest performer this morning, swimming a 53.76. Dutch rising star sprinter Marrit Steenbergen was the only other swimmer under 54 seconds this morning, posting the second-fastest time with a 53.91. Australia’s Cate Campbell came in third this morning at 54.30, while Sarah Sjostrom was fourth at 54.66. Keep an eye on Haughey and Sjostrom in particular tonight, since the duo both had great 50 freestyles last night. Sjostrom won the event handily with a sizzling 24.02, while Haughey broke the Hong Kong Record in the event with a 24.56, coming in second behind Sjostrom.
