Friday AM Heat Sheet

The second preliminary session of the Ohio State Invitational will feature heats in the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke. This morning’s preliminary heats will be conducted in the long course pool, before switching over to yards for finals. Top 25 teams from Ohio State, Indiana, Louisville, and Notre Dame will all be in action this morning.

Three U.S. World Championship medalists from last summer will be present for today’s prelim session, as Anna Peplowski and Chris Guiliano will both take on the 200 freestyle while Josh Matheny will contest the 100 breaststroke.

Senior Gabi Albiero of Louisville secured the top qualifying spot in the 100 butterfly, winning heat 4 with a 59.14. Albiero, who is coming off a 50 freestyle gold medal performance at the Pan American Games a month ago, owns a personal best of 57.82 in the event.

Katherine Zenick qualified 2nd with a 1:00.15, just shy of her 59.66 best time from July. Christiana Regenauer of Louisville qualified 3rd, just 0.03 off her best time from June.

Ohio State will have four representatives in tonight’s ‘A’ final, as Morgan Kraus, Tristan Harrison, and Catherine Russo will join Zenick later today.

Indiana senior Tomer Frankel secured the top seed for tonight’s final, clocking a 52.27 this morning. Frankel, who has been as quick as 51.14 in the event, was followed closely by teammate Finn Brooks. Brooks, a junior, swam a 52.48 to come within 0.13 of his best time from this past summer.

Indiana and Notre Dame put their butterfly depth on display this morning, each securing four spots in tonight’s ‘A’ final. Teammates Brendan Burns (53.49) and Dylan Smiley (54.05) will join Frankel and Brooks in the final tonight, while Cason Wilburn, Tanner Filion, Tommy Janton, and Marcus Gentry will feature for Notre Dame later today.

Dalton Lowe of Louisville (53.36) and Evan Fentress of Ohio State (53.58) both advanced to tonight’s ‘A’ final as well.

Abby Hay of Louisville topped the 400 IM field this morning, qualifying first for tonight’s final with a 4:50.67. Hay posted a time this morning that is faster than she went in the final at US Nationals this summer (4:52.17), but shy of her best time of 4:48.00 from 2021.

Ohio State had a pair of swimmers qualify 2nd and 3rd, as sophomore Krista Marlin posted a 4:51.38 while senior Kyra Sommerstad clocked 4:51.85. This was a massive best time for Marlin, as she lowered her previous best of 4:56.66 from the 2022 International Team Trials.

Tonight’s final will be fairly even split in terms of teams represented, as Indiana, Ohio State, and Louisville each advanced three athletes. Libby Michel of Cincinnati will also be present in tonight’s final, as she clocked 4:53.93 this morning to come up 0.13 shy of her best time.

Sophomore Tristan Jankovics of Ohio State, who posted a 1:59.05 200 IM school record yesterday, continued to impress this morning by qualifying 1st for the 400 IM final. Jankovics checked in at a 4:19.63 to clear the field by over two seconds. Tommy Bried the Louisville junior, turned in a 4:21.65 to qualify 2nd while Toby Barnett of Indiana qualified 3rd. Barnett had a great swim this morning, chopping off nearly five seconds from his previous best time of 4:27.46.

Indiana will be well represented in tonight’s ‘A’ final, as they qualified four athletes. Joining Barnett tonight will be Tristan DeWitt (4:24.98), Drew Reiter (4:27.25), and Lucas Piunti (4:28.46). Notably, the time by DeWitt was also a personal best.

The top six swimmers this morning all posted times under the 4:25.19 Olympic Trials qualifying time, the most of any event so far this morning.

World Championships Silver Medalist Anna Peplowski led the 200 free field this morning, posting a 1:59.18 to win the final heat. Peplowski, who owns a best time of 1:57.02 from May, swam a very controlled race this morning. She opened in 58.05 before closing in 1:01.13, splitting 27.95, 30.10, 30.56, 30.57.  Her teammate, senior Ella Ristic, clocked 2:00.84 to qualify second overall.

Kristina Paegle and Elyse Heiser will join their two teammates in tonight’s final, while Louisville will also have four representatives in the form of Summer Cardwell, Paige Hetrick, Fernanda Gomes Celidonio, and Lucy Mehraban.

Amy Fulmer qualified third for Ohio State. Fulmer, who owns a yards best time of 1:42.94, will look to challenge for the win tonight. It should be a great race, as Peplowski owns a best of 1:42.86. The two will swim side-by-side tonight.

Men’s 200-Meter Freestyle

Junior Rafael Miroslaw posted the top time of the morning in the 200 freestyle, turning in a 1:47.44. Miroslaw was out quick, splitting 24.68 and 27.38 on the first 100 to turn through in 52.06, before holding 27s on the final two 50s. Sophomore Tomas Navikonis of Ohio State touched in a 1:48.65 best time to win his heat, advancing him 2nd overall. Navikonis nearly even-split his race this morning, splitting 53.94/54.71.

Chris Guiliano of Notre Dame posted a lifetime best in heat 3 to qualify 3rd. His previous best of 1:49.59 was recorded at Nationals last summer, where he had a massive breakthrough to qualify for the World Championship team in the individual 100 freestyle.

Louisville advanced four swimmers to tonight’s final, placing 4th through 7th this morning. They are led by Murilo Sartori, who recorded a 1:49.64 out of heat 5.

Alex Gonzalez of Cincinnati clocked a best time of 1:52.32 to advance to tonight’s ‘A’ final, erasing the 1:52.96 he put on the books in July.

Women’s 100-Meter Breaststroke

Hannah Bach and Josie Panitz lead a 1-2 punch for Ohio State into tonight’s final. Tonight’s race should be a tight one, as both have been :57 in the yards format. Last night, Bach split 57.21 on the breaststroke leg of OSU’s B-relay, compared to Panitz (57.63) on the A-relay.

Brearna Crawford, a junior from Indiana, had a breakthrough swim this morning. She posted a 1:09.95, lowering her best time from 2019 (1:09.98). Crawford owns a 59.32 best time in the yards format from 2021, and will look to challenge that mark in tonight’s final.

Junior Kabria Champan of Indiana also had a great prelim swimming, knocking exactly a second off her best time to post a 1:10.11.

Denis Petrashov of Louisville is the top qualifier for the 100 breaststroke final tonight. He had a tight battle with Indiana junior Josh Matheny this morning, ultimately getting the touch at 1:00.96. Matheny qualified 2nd with a 1:00.98, followed by three teammates: Max Reich (1:01.26), Jassen Yep (1:01.65), and Benson Wong (1:02.28). The Indiana breaststroke crew will be on full display in the middle lanes of the pool tonight, holding four of the top five seeds.

Louisville and OSU each put two swimmers in tonights ‘A’ final, with Aidan Kreiley (1:02.98) and Luke Shourds (1:03.21) representing Louisville later today. Billy Regan (1:03.07) and Rylan McDaniel (1:03.16) will race for OSU in the final tonight.

Notre Dame senior Tyler Christianson swam a best time of 1:03.01 to qualify 7th for tonight’s final, lowering the 1:03.16 he recorded in 2021.

Indiana sophomore Mya DeWitt clocked a best time of 1:01.29 this morning to take the top seed heading into tonight’s final. DeWitt lowered her best time of 1:01.84 from the summer of 2022, and will look to challenge her 52.85 short course best time tonight. Teammate Kacey McKenna will join DeWitt in tonight’s final, as she qualifed 8th in 1:02.66.

Ohio State and Louisville each qualified three swimmers for tonight’s ‘A’ final. Krista Marlin (1:02.30), Nyah Funderburke (1:02.52), and Morgan Kraus (1:02.58) will highlight OSU’s squad, while Paige Hetrick (1:01.86), Lucy Mehraban (1:02.27), and Ally Boynton (1:03.07) will look to contend for Louisville.

Notre Dame had a strong showing in this event this morning, with Madelyn Christman (1:02.13) and Jess Geriane (1:03.27) advancing to the ‘A’ final.

The Notre Dame men had a huge morning in the 100 backstroke. Leading the way was Tommy Janton, as he clocked a 54.36 to take the top seed. That swim was just off his best of 54.18, which he recorded at Nationals this summer in Indy. Teammates Tanner Filion (54.78) and Marcus Gentry (54.96) qualified 3rd and 4th, marking 3 swimmers from Notre Dame under the :55 mark.

Indiana qualified five representatives for tonight’s ‘A’ final, with Kai Van Westering leading the way (54.66). Defending NCAA Champion Brendan Burns will look to move up from his 5th seed tonight, as he owns 43.61 best time in the short course pool. Luke Barr, Gavin Wight, and Joe Radde also qualified for the Hoosiers.

Louisville’s Jackson Milliard and Cincinnati’s Jon Osa will feature in tonight’s ‘A’ final, too.
