Saturday Prelims Heat Sheet

The final day of action at the Ohio State Invitational will see action in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and the mile. Today’s prelim session will be conducted in the long course pool before transitioning back to short course yards for the finals.

Defending 100 backstroke NCAA champion Brendan Burns will swim the 200 backstroke this morning. Burns, who typically swims the 200 fly on the final day of the competition, owns a LCM best time of 2:01.04. Tommy Janton of Notre Dame will be one to watch during today’s prelim session, as his best time of 1:56.94 earned him a spot in ‘A’ final at Nationals last summer.

Gabi Albiero, who took the 100 butterfly win last night in 50.83, enters the morning as the top seed in the 100 freestyle. She owns a best time of 54.35 in the LCM version of event from this past summer.

Ohio State sophomore Krista Marlin swam a massive personal best time to lead all qualifiers into the 200 backstroke final. Marlin stopped the clock in 2:10.49, taking exactly 4 seconds off her previous best from US Nationals in June. Marlin will look to challenge her SCY best of 1:55.68 in the final tonight.

Indiana junior Anna Peplowski, who won the 200 (1:42.97) and 500 (4:38.29) freestyles earlier in the meet, qualified 2nd with a time of 2:12.56.

Her teammate, Mya DeWitt, posted a time of 2:14.29 to narrowly miss her best of 2:14.02 from this past summer.

Indiana will have 5 athletes in tonight’s final, as Elyse Heiser (4th), Anna Freed (6th), and Jessica Cheng (7th) also safely advanced.

Sophomore Tommy Janton of Notre Dame posted the fastest 200 backstroke of the morning, stopping the clock at 2:00.06.

Notre Dame will have 4 swimmers advance to tonight’s ‘A’ final, as Tanner Filion qualified 5th, Jack Fitzpatrick qualified 9th, and Kaden Smesko took 10th. This is a similar picture to what happened during Friday’s 100 backstroke prelims, with the Notre Dame backstroke depth on full display.

Indiana junior Brendan Burns took 2nd this morning with a time of 2:01.44. Burns, who owns a SCY best of 1:38.22, will look to move up for the win tonight. His teammate, Kai Van Westering, will join him in the final tonight.

Notably, the top 3 swimmers posted a time faster than the US Trials cut. However, each of those swimmers have swam a faster time within the last year.

The 100 freestyle prelims saw six swimmers crack the :56 mark. Leading the way was Ohio State graduate student Amy Fulmer (55.14), with Gabi Albiero (55.41), Lucy Mehraban (55.43), Kristiana Paegle (55.63), Katherine Zenick (55.69), and Christiana Regenauer (55.93) following closely behind. The swim by Mehraban was a personal best, eclipsing her previous mark of 55.70 from August.

The Louisville sprinters showcased their depth this morning, advancing 5 of the top 10 to the ‘A’ final. Ohio State advanced 3 swimmers and Indiana qualified 2.

This looks to be a tight race in tonight’s final, as 2nd through 5th place this morning were only separated by 0.28.

Chris Guiliano of Notre Dame blasted a 47.98 to win heat 6, matching his personal best time from the World Championship Trials in June. Guiliano split 23.02/24.96 en route to his equalled best time and will look to challenge his 41.48 SCY best time tonight.

Guiliano has had a great meet thus far, posting 22.25/1:48.97 in the 50 and 200 LCM freestyles. The 200 was a personal best time as well. He also clocked an 18.84 50-yd freestyle best time and split 18.24 anchoring the 200 Medley Relay.

Indiana took 2nd and 3rd this morning, with Rafael Miroslaw (49.14) and Mikkel Lee (49.22) leading the way for the Hoosiers.

Just like they did in the women’s 100 free, Louisville will represent half of the ‘A’ finalists tonight. Leading the way was Murilo Sartori (50.01), who was followed by Matias Santiso (50.41), Denis Loktev (50.43), Yassin Hossam (50.47), and Dalton Lowe (50.48)

Indiana junior Brearna Crawford took the top seed in the 200 breast. She posted a time of 2:29.09, erasing her previous mark of 2:29.83 from May of 2022.

Crawford had a breakthrough swim in the 100 breaststroke on Friday morning, as she took down a PB that stood for nearly four years.

Both Indiana and Notre Dame will have 3 individuals advancing to the ‘A’ final, while Ohio State has 2. Cincinnati will have a representative in the final, as Julie Rose posted a time of 2:37.28 to take 8th this morning. That time comes in just shy of her best time of 2:35.54.

Notably, Notre Dame fifth year Ellie Jew knocked over two full seconds from her best time to place 5th this morning. Her previous mark stood at 2:37.27, which she logged back in July of 2018.

The Indiana breaststroke crew was on full display once again in Columbus, placing 6 athletes into tonight’s ‘A’ final. Max Reich leads the way with a time of 2:12.53. Teammates Jassen Yep (2:13.88), Benson Wong (2:13.99), Josh Matheny (2:14.00), Toby Barnett (2:17.26), and Luke Barr (2:17.90) will join Reich in the final.

Yesterday, placed 1-2-3 in the men’s 100 breast. Yep led the way with a personal best of 51.49, while Matheny (51.81) and Reich (51.87) completed the sweep for the Hoosiers. The Hoosiers will look to do the same in the 200 final tonight.

Denis Petrashov of Louisville had a strong showing, qualifying 5th in 2:14.31. Ohio State placed a pair of athletes into the final, as Billy Regan (2:16.50) and Nathan Holty (2:16.97) currently rank 7th and 8th.

Indiana sophomore Katie Forrester will advance to the 200 butterfly final tonight ranked 1st. Forrester, who recently placed 4th in 2:12.90 at the Pan American Games, recorded a time of 2:13.12 this morning. Forrester owns a best time of 1:56.87 in the SCY version of the event, and will look to challenge that tonight.

Indiana will represent half of tonight’s ‘A’ final, advancing 5 to the 10-lane final. Sophomore Avery Spade (2:16.58), sophomore Lily Hann (2:17.99), senior Anna Freed (2:18.01), and freshman Ava Whitaker (2:19.30) advanced alongside Forrester.

Notre Dame and Ohio State each advanced 2 athletes, while Abby Hay will be the lone representative for Louisville.

Indiana wrapped up the final prelims session of the Ohio State invite by advancing 4 swimmers to tonight’s ‘A’ final. Drew Reiter posted a time of 2:01.49 to qualify 1st. Reiter, who owns a SCY best of 1:46.05, will look to lower that mark tonight. Indiana teammates Armando Vegas, Tomer Frankel, and Dylan Smiley will join Reiter in the final later today.

Cincinnati advanced 2 athletes to tonight’s championship final, as Tommy Eaton (2:03.11) and Dillon Edge (2:03.94) placed 6th and 7th this morning. Neither athlete clocked a best time in the event, but they will have the opportunity to go after their SCY best times tonight.
