- Day 3 Prelims – Heat Sheets
There was one significant scratch for Sunday morning at the 2023 Atlanta Classic – top-seeded Kieran Smith will not contest the 200 IM. Smith, who was seeded first in the 200 IM by nearly 2 seconds, will instead put his focus on the 100 freestyle, where he is seeded second. Smith already won the 200 freestyle and placed 2nd in the 400 freestyle at this meet.
With his scratch, his Florida teammate Caeleb Dressel is now the top-seed in the event with his entry time of 1:59.97. Just because Dressel remains on the heat sheets, doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll actually swim the race, however. On Friday morning, Dressel no-showed his heat of the 200 freestyle in favor of the 100 butterfly. With the 100 freestyle, one of his best events, just after the 200 IM in the schedule, he could still do the same here.
Dynamo teammates Sophie Brison and Ian Grum also scratched out of the 200 backstroke, with Brison holding the 6-seed and Grum coming in as the second-seed. Both swimmers appear to have scratched the entire meet, as neither swimmer has competed at all this weekend.
Day 1 Star Watch:
- Kate Douglass has been having a strong meet thus far, winning all of her events while posting best times in the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. Douglass will contest the 200 IM and 100 Freestyle on Day 3, both events she could potentially swim at the 2023 World Championships later this summer.
- Katie Ledecky will swim the 800 freestyle to close out the morning session. She will not be in the 1500 freestyle that is slated to occur later today, however. Ledecky is seeded first by over 30 seconds in the 800.
- Bobby Finke is also set to take on the 800 freestyle as the top seed, and he will also be swimming the 1500 freestyle as the top-ranked swimmer in that event.
- Summer McIntosh comes in as the top-seeded swimmer in the 200 backstroke by over 4 seconds.
- The men’s 100 freestyle is set to be one of the most star-studded events of the morning with Josh Liendo, Kieran Smith, Alberto Mestre, Macguire McDuff, and Caeleb Dressel seeded in the top 5.
Intriguing Story (Non-Star)
- 14 year-old Rylee Erisman already made the A-final of the women’s 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle at this meet, placing 6th in the 100 back and 5th in the 50 free. She’s seeded 11th in the 200 backstroke today, but could find herself in the A-final again as the youngest competitor in the field.
800-1500 double? Have not seen that before.
That 200 fly last night, now the 800/1500 in one session? 😵💫🤢🤮
Big 1976 Mission Viejo Animal Lane energy double.
You’re old.
Any commenters on deck…which event did Finke check in for? We’d love to see the double, but with Florida’s overentering history will try not to get my hopes up tooo high, lol.
