California’s high school swimming season concludes Saturday at the Olympic Swim Complex in Fresno with the CIF State Championship finals this morning.

A quartet of swimmers clocked top qualifying times in multiple individual events during prelims on Friday afternoon. On the girls side, Poly-Riverside sophomore Ava DeAnda is the top seed in the 100 free (49.53) and 200 free (1:47.93).

On the boys side, Torrey Pines senior Logan Noguchi dominated the 100 fly (46.61) and 100 back (47.83). San Marino senior Daniel Li showed off his versatility as the top seed in the 200 IM (1:47.24) and 100 breast (53.59). Foothill freshman Luka Mijatovic is living up to the hype so far at his first CIF State meet with top-seeded times in the 200 free (1:36.69) and 500 free (4:20.25).

GIRLS 200 MEDLEY RELAY – FINAL

The Clovis West girls kicked off the finals session with a 200 medley relay victory in 1:41.50 courtesy of Hailey Marinovich (27.15 back), Hannah Marinovich (27.53 breast), Audrey Hill (24.10 fly), and Sophia Oka-Fedder (22.72 free).

Clovis West beat defending champion Campolindo (1:42.01) and Santa Margarita (1:42.16) by more than half a second. Cal commit Adriana Smith led Campolindo with a 25.66 backstroke leadoff, slightly off her personal-best 24.90 from last year’s victory. Santa Margarita made a strong push late behind its back half duo of Chloe Stinson (23.74 fly) and Gracyn Aquino (22.08 free).

Carondelet (1:42.86) eked past Hart (1:43.14) for 4th place by just a few tenths.

The boys 200 medley relay final turned into a back-and-forth thriller between Loyola and defending champion Santa Margarita.

Ray Liu (23.04 back) and Gavin Santoso (24.38 breast) put Loyola ahead by more than a second at the midway point before Santa Margarita senior Daniel Verdolaga blasted a 20.83 fly split to erase the 1.15-second deficit. Loyola senior Andrew Brown dove into the water trailing by .08 seconds on the anchor leg and rallied his squad from behind with a 20.01 split for the victory in 1:29.49 — just .02 seconds ahead of Santa Margarita senior Ramon Jiang (20.11 anchor).

Derek Hitchens (22.33 back), Ryan Connole (25.37 breast), Elson Lee (22.32 fly), and Michael Abshier (20.87 free) carried Northwood to a 3rd-place finish in 1:30.89.

Poly-Riverside sophomore Ava DeAnda broke 1:46 for the first time en route to her first CIF State title in the 200 free (1:45.98). She dropped almost two tenths off her previous-best 1:46.17 from March. DeAnda placed 3rd last year as a freshman (1:47.72).

No one else in the field finished sub-1:47 as Hart senior Lily Dormans took 2nd place in 1:47.60. The USC commit was within a few tenths of her personal-best 1:47.37 from 2022.

Davis senior Ava Portello got under 1:48 for the first time with her 3rd-place effort in 1:47.91. The Rice commit owned a previous best of 1:48.04 from March.

After sneaking into the A-final as the No. 8 seed in prelims (1:38.02), Nordhoff senior Quin Seider took the 200 free title in 1:34.97 ahead of Foothill freshman Luka Mijatovic (1:35.79).

Seider, an ASU commit, shaved three tenths of a second off his previous-best 1:35.27 from last week. Mijatovic was four tenths slower than his personal-best 1:35.39 from last month.

La Canada senior Pierce O’Grady (1:36.09) and Northwood sophomore Andrew Maksymowski (1:36.25) were the only other swimmers under 1:37 in the final. They both broke 1:36 last week.

Los Altos freshman Maren Byrne hit a new lifetime best on her way to the 200 IM title in 2:00.00. She dropped almost a second off her previous-best 2:00.82 from last month.

Campolindo senior Emilia Barck earned a runner-up finish in 2:00.37, within a second of her personal-best 1:59.66 that placed the Brown commit 4th in this race last year.

Mater Dei junior Isa Chavez-Varela claimed 3rd place in 2:01.84, a couple tenths ahead of Archbishop Mitty senior Eunice Lee (2:02.08). Chavez-Varela, an Alabama commit, dropped almost a second off her previous-best 2:02.63 from 2022, when she placed 10th as a freshman. Lee, a Yale commit, has been as fast as 2:00.59 in prelims last year before placing 6th in the final.

Archbishop Mitty freshman Shareef Elaydi stunned the field with an upset victory over San Marino senior Daniel Li (1:46.73), clocking a winning time of 1:45.93 that ranks No. 2 in the U.S. boys 13-14 national age group (NAG) rankings behind only Michael Andrew (1:45.29 from 2014). Elaydi crushed his best time from April (1:48.09) by more than two seconds, splitting 23.32 fly, 27.26 back, 30.00 breast, and 25.35 free. He’ll have three more years to chase down the 200 IM meet record of 1:45.93 set by Colin Geer last year.

Li, a Stanford commit, was the favorite in today’s final after qualifying 1st in prelims on Friday with a time of 1:47.24, more than a second ahead of Elaydi (1:48.32).

Loyola junior Ray Liu (1:46.90) held off a late push by Dougherty Valley sophomore Tim Wu (1:47.04) for 3rd place. Liu was slightly faster last week at 1:46.38, where he took 3rd place behind Li and Verdolaga at the CIF Southern Section Division I Championships.

Whitney junior Jada Duncan dethroned Santa Margarita junior Gracyn Aquino for the 50 free crown, shaving a few hundredths off her lifetime best from last week with a winning time of 22.61. Duncan, a UCLA commit, placed 2nd as a freshman (22.83) before skipping last year’s CIF State meet.

Aquino, a Cal commit, was only about a tenth off her personal-best 22.65 from last week. The pair were the only two swimmers under 23 seconds in the final.

Just a tenth of a second separated five swimmers in the battle for 3rd place. Monte Vista senior Genesee Quon touched 3rd in 23.11, taking a hundredth off her lifetime best from prelims. Before this weekend, the University of Chicago commit owned a best time of 23.32 from last May, when she placed 4th in this race.

Pioneer junior Jojo Brant placed 4th in 23.14, shaving .04 seconds off her best time from March in the process.

Villa Park senior Allison Mann tied San Ramon Valley senior Miranda Stevenson for 5th place in 23.16.

Crossroads sophomore Miles Blackson-Dunbar stepped up when it mattered most, posting a personal-best 20.11 to win the 50 free title by more than two tenths. He shaved .o7 seconds off his previous best from November that he matched in prelims.

Mountain View junior Dar Lavrenko was the top qualifier in prelims at 20.17, but the Cal commit fell to 3rd place in the final (20.38) behind Bellarmine sophomore Tyler Porter (20.34). Porter owned a lifetime best of 21.35 heading into this meet before firing off a personal-best 20.57 in prelims.

Loyola senior Andrew Brown (20.47) eked past Woodbridge senior Jacob Wang (20.48) for 4th place. Brown, a Boston College commit, was just a blink off his personal-best 20.41 from last week.

Whitney junior Jada Duncan became the first double winner of the finals session with a 100 fly victory in 52.51. The UCLA commit knocked more than half a second off her previous-best 53.12 from 2022 after already capturing the 50 free crown a couple events earlier in 22.61.

About half a second behind Duncan was La Jolla senior Arielle Brotman (53.00), who also lowered her lifetime best. The Cal commit came into the meet with a best time of 53.52 before going 53.44 in prelims on Friday as the top qualifier.

Valencia sophomore Tori Yamamura (53.53) beat Ventura junior Sarah Beckman (53.88) and Woodbridge senior Zara Masud (53.92) by a few tenths for 3rd place. Yamamura sliced a couple tenths off her previous-best 53.75 from last week while Beckman, a Harvard commit, narrowly missed her personal-best 53.62 from last week.

Torrey Pines senior Logan Noguchi cruised to the 100 fly victory in 46.12, scaring the meet record (Ethan Hu’s 45.72 from 2019) with a new lifetime best. The Princeton commit dropped .42 seconds off his previous-best 46.54 from December.

Santa Margarita senior Daniel Verdolaga followed up his huge butterfly split from the opening 200 medley relay with a runner-up finish in the 100 fly (47.23), a few tenths off the Army commit’s personal-best 46.84 from last month.

Dougherty Valley sophomore Tim Wu (47.51) held off Archbishop Mitty freshman Shareef Elaydi (47.60) for 3rd place in a battle of rising stars. Wu was just a hundredth off his best time from November while Elaydi lowered his previous-best 48.11 from December after already winning the 200 IM earlier in the session. Elaydi now ranks 5th in the U.S. boys’ 13-14 NAG rankings right behind Wu.

Poly-Riverside sophomore Ava DeAnda took down the first meet record of the weekend with her dominant 100 free victory in 48.27. She defended her title after winning last year in 49.14, dropping more than half a second off her previous-best 48.80 from December.

Villa Park senior Allison Mann was the only other swimmer under 50 seconds at 49.81 for 2nd place. The San Diego State commit was slightly faster last week at 49.77.

Pioneer junior Jojo Brant blasted a personal-best 50.14 to snag 3rd place, taking more than half a second off her previous-best 50.84 from last week.

Santa Margarita junior Gracyn Aquino placed 4th in 50.19, slightly slower than her prelims performance on Friday (50.18).

Nordhoff senior Quin Seider rattled the meet record in the 100 free en route to his second individual title of the day in 43.04 — within a tenth of Ethan Harrington‘s standard (42.92) from last year. The ASU commit recorded his second lifetime best of the session, lowering his previous-best 43.28 from December.

Seider touched more than a second ahead of St. Francis senior Nathan Kim (44.08), an MIT commit who was within half a second of his personal-best 43.61 from December.

Santa Margarita senior Hunter Cehelnik (44.24) snuck past Northgate senior Mason Wendler (44.30) for 3rd place. Cehelnik, a UCSD commit, missed his lifetime best from last week by a few hundredths while Wendler, a UCSB commit, shaved two hundredths off his best time from last week.

Wilson senior Samantha Hamilton earned the 500 free victory in 4:47.30, almost five seconds ahead of the field. The Kentucky commit reached the wall within a second of her best time from last week (4:46.63). Hamilton placed 3rd last year in 4:52.72.

Hart senior Lily Dormans rallied from behind on the last two laps to overtake Northgate senior Lily Struempf (4:52.27) for 2nd place with a time of 4:52.18. Dormans, a USC commit, has been as fast as 4:48.75 back in 2022 while Struempf, a UNC commit, was just a second off her personal-best 4:51.25 from December.

After placing 2nd in the 200 free, Foothill freshman Luka Mijatovic blew away the field in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:16.57. The age-group sensation reached the wall within a couple seconds of his 13-14 NAG record 4:14.83 from last month. Mijatovic has three more years to chase Matthew Chai‘s meet record of 4:15.09 from 2022.

Rio Americano senior Charlie Franz was almost seven seconds behind Mijatovic with a runner-up finish in 4:23.33. The UCSD commit dropped more than two seconds off his previous-best 4:25.54 from December.

La Canada senior Pierce O’Grady (4:24.29) and Northwood sophomore Andrew Maksymowski (4:24.75) rounded out the top four finishers. Both swimmers were a couple seconds slower than their best times.

Santa Margarita repeated as 200 free relay champions thanks to a strong effort from Victoria Mori (23.37), Morgan Hoppe (24.04), Ariel Lin (23.40), and Chloe Stinson (22.54).

San Ramon Valley senior Miranda Stevenson ripped a 21.99 anchor to make it a tight finish, but her squad totaled 1:33.47 to come up just about a tenth short of Santa Margarita (1:33.35). Stevenson was joined by Alexis Parkinson (23.79), Avery Knapp (24.08), and Sasha Babushkina (23.61) on San Ramon Valley’s runner-up relay.

Torrey Pines sophomore Aya Ferguson fired off a 22.73 anchor, but it wasn’t quite enough to catch Monte Vista freshman Eva Busquets (22.94) as Torrey Pines placed 4th in 1:34.46, just about a tenth behind Monte Vista (1:34.29).

Genesee Quon (23.62), Zoe Venetta (23.54), and Addy VonderAhe (24.19), joined Busquets on Monte Vista’s 3rd-place squad.

San Ramon Valley senior Sawyer Jones threw down a 20.08 anchor split to rally his team past Santa Margarita (1:23.09) by just about a tenth of a second in 1:22.98.

Jones was joined by Drew Arney (21.15), Chase King (20.91), and Nick Tovani (20.84) on San Ramon Valley’s winning quartet.

De La Salle (1:23.46), Northwood (1:23.68), and Jesuit (1:23.86) also broke 1:24 in the A-final.

Carondelet senior Maddie O’Connell dominated the 100 back with a winning mark of 53.10, within a tenth of her personal-best 53.02 from last week. The UCSD commit was slightly faster than her 53.14 from prelims.

Right after leading Monte Vista’s 200 free relay to a 3rd-place finish, Monte Vista freshman Ella Busquets returned to the pool for a runner-up finish in the 100 back (54.37). Busquets dropped more than a tenth off her previous-best 54.52 from prelims.

St. Ignatius senior Coco Quill claimed 3rd place in a personal-best 54.60 as the only other swimmer sub-55 seconds in the final. The UCSB commit had never been under 55 seconds before until prelims on Friday, when she clocked her previous-best 54.88.

Torrey Pines senior Logan Noguchi escaped with his second individual title in the 100 back (47.49) by just a blink ahead of American senior Edward Huang (47.55).

Noguchi, a Princeton commit, lowered his previous-best 47.83 from prelims by a few tenths. He hadn’t been under 48 seconds before this meet. Huang, a Cal commit, touched within a tenth of his personal-best 47.47 from December.

St. Francis senior Nathan Kim also broke 48 seconds with a 3rd-place showing in 47.88. The MIT commit matched his lifetime best from December.

Liberty Christian freshman Bianca Nwaizu rose to the occasion with a personal-best 1:00.23 to secure the 100 breast crown. She dropped almost a second off her previous-best 1:01.03 from last week.

San Ramon Valley senior Miranda Stevenson blasted another personal best to place 2nd in 1:00.77. The UCSB commit had never been under 1:02 before this weekend, when she clocked a 1:01.53 in prelims.

The top qualifier in prelims, Clovis West senior Hannah Marinovich (1:00.78), took 3rd place just a hundredth behind Stevenson. The Tennessee commit narrowly missed her personal-best 1:00.74 from her runner-up finish last year.

San Marino senior Daniel Li cruised to a three-peat in the 100 breast with a winning time of 53.40, still about a second off his personal-best 52.43 from last May. The Stanford commit defended his title after winning last year in 52.83 and two years ago in 53.79.

Li touched more a second ahead of Christopher senior Thomas Aguero (54.42), a Tennessee commit who took a couple tenths off his previous-best 54.69 from December.

Canyon Crest Academy senior Bekzhan Yessengeldy placed 3rd in 55.23, lowering his previous-best 55.44 from prelims. Before this weekend, his best time stood at 55.68 from last week.

The Santa Margarita girls punctuated their third consecutive state title with a 400 free relay win in 3:22.80 thanks to Victoria Mori (51.15), Audrey Lee (51.17), Ariel Lin (50.61), and Gracyn Aquino (49.87).

About a second behind Santa Margarita was Clovis West (3:23.89), which got strong swims from Audrey Hill (50.88), Sophia Oka-Fedder (50.22), Hailey Marinovich (52.27), and Avery Easterling (50.52).

UCSB commit Coco Quill split 50.36 on the anchor leg to help St. Ignatius (3:25.30) hold off Monte Vista (3:25.43) for 3rd place.

Northwood triumphed in the final race of the meet with a 400 free relay victory (2:58.04) over Santa Margarita (2:58.68), but it wasn’t enough to surpass Santa Margarita in the team standings.

Santa Margarita swept the boys and girls team titles for the second year in a row, even without junior star Teagan O’Dell.

Derek Hitchens (44.53), Elson Lee (45.50), Will Chen (44.01), and Andrew Maksymowski (44.00) led Northwood to the win.

Santa Margarita’s runner-up finish was fueled by Hunter Cehelnik (44.36), Daniel Verdolaga (44.54), Adam Lee (45.87), and Ramon Jiang (43.91). Santa Margarita and Northwood were the only teams under three minutes in the final.
