For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Down” to B finalists.

UPDATED AFTER DIVING: As expected, Indiana had a big morning in platform diving, earning 3 spots in the A final. Somewhat more surprisingly, Cal picked up an A and a B to solidify their projected second-place in the team standings. Tennessee, Purdue, LSU, and Ohio State also placed a diver among the top 8. That should move Tennessee past Texas in the team race, and should pull Ohio State within 5 points of Georgia. There are still some great team battles in the works!
Arizona State has all but wrapped up its first NCAA men’s title in swimming and diving, earning 6 A-final and 3 B-final slots for Saturday night’s finals session. The Sun Devils managed 2 top-8 swimmers in both the 200 back and 200 breast, which is a testament to their depth this season. ASU’s winning margin should north of 60 points.
Meanwhile, the battle for second place, which was being waged on a daily basis between Florida and Cal, lost some momentum last night when Florida’s 400 medley relay was disqualified, but it would have been close anyway, as Cal has outperformed their seed by double digits every day. This morning was no different; the Golden Bears earned 6 A-final and 3 B-final slots, improving their seeds by 48 points.
Indiana went 4 up, 3 down, but could have another couple of A finalists in platform diving, if last night’s 1-2 finish in 3-meter springboard was any indication.
NC State and UVA had big mornings, too, outperforming the psych sheet by 25 and 26 points, respectively.

What happened to Florida at day 4?
Bob Bowman rested them too much for conference!!! Jokes aside, ASU continues to show that elite swimmers can and should swim fast all the time
Texas – 7th
Oh my!

Think you are missing an A finalist for Michigan in 2 fly.
Michigan has 1up, 2 down in the 200 Fly. Groumi, Ray and Geer.

Florida has not shown up since the relay DQ.
The last time Cal finished lower than 2nd was 2009. I genuinely thought the streak was going to end this year but looks like I’m probably wrong.
It’s nice to see Cal’s diving program on the upswing.
I still hope the 400 FR is meaningful for the team race.
Congratulations to the Sun Devils on their impressive performance.
Would have been a lot closer if UF didn’t DQ their relay last night, but they did.
Didn’t seem to matter too much after this morning. UF was still competing for 2nd as of last night, even after the DQ’d relay. I wonder what happened 🤔
This consistency from Cal is incredible. Go Bears! Congrats to ASU on a great team win.
