2024 Paris Olympics: 2x D3 NCAA Champion Jesse Ssengonzi Lowers Own Ugandan Record in 100 Fly

2024 PARIS SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Swimming in the first heat of the morning, Jesse Ssengonzi broke his own Ugandan national record in the men’s 100 butterfly (53.76). His effort ranked him 31st overall.

Ssengonzi’s previous record stood at 54.06, set at the 2023 edition of the Westmont Pro Swim Series. He slashed exactly three-tenths of a second from that mark this morning. All of his improvement comes from an improved second 50. Compared to his previous record he opened 0.29-seconds slower, but closed nearly six-tenths faster.

100m 53.76 (28.48) 54.06 (29.07)

This isn’t the only record Ssengonzi has broken this season. He also cracked the Division III NCAA record in the 100-yard fly during the collegiate season en route to his second NCAA title in the event.

Ssengonzi just wrapped up his senior year at the University of Chicago, where he helped lead the Maroon men to their second-straight 3rd-place team finish at the DIII NCAA Championships. He was then named a CSC All-American for the second year in a row. He graduated with a degree in economics.

According to the NCAA database, Ssengonzi is one of four Division III-trained swimmers competing at the Olympic Games. The others are Lara Dashti (Wellesley College, Kuwait), Alex Grand’Pierre (Bowdoin College, Haiti), and Kayla Hepler (Nebraska Wesleyan University, Marshall Islands).

Great swim for him took a look back at worlds and Olympic times and that time would have won Olympic gold as recently as 1980 and would have won bronze in 1984. As for worlds he would have won gold as recently as 1982 and won bronze as recently as 1986 great swim for him.
