2024 Paris Olympics: Day 5 Prelims Preview

2024 PARIS SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Day 5 Prelims Heat Sheet

Day 5 Event Lineup

  • Women’s 200 breast
  • Men’s 200 back
  • Women’s 200 fly

American Record holder Kate Douglass will make her first individual appearance in the women’s 200 breaststroke where she is the top seed with a 2:19.30. Douglass opted to not compete in the 100 free in Paris as the semifinal tonight of the 200 breast would have been in the same session as the final of the 100 free.

Also in the 200 breast is Tes Schouten who won the 2024 World Championship title in the event and enters with a 2:19.81. Defending Olympic Champion Tatjana Smith enters as the #3 seed and already won gold this week winning the women’s 100 breast.

Hubert Kos of Hungary already set a national record in the 100 backstroke and enters the 200 as the top seed. Kos won the 2023 World Championship title in the event and will look to fend off Ryan Murphy of the US as Murphy is the #2 seed. Murphy won silver in the event in Tokyo. Hugo Gonzalez of Spain made the final in the 100 back and will look to win Spain its first medal in the event if he makes the final.

Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh already won her first Olympic gold capturing the 400 IM this week. She also won silver in the women’s 400 free. Here she will look to set herself up well in the women’s 200 fly. She won the event at 2022 and 2023 Worlds and enters with a 2:04.06.

Regan Smith of the US will be back in action in the women’s 200 fly as she comes off silver in the 100 backstroke. Smith won silver in the event in Tokyo and will look to make the podium again, entering the event as the #2 seed with a 2:04.80. Australia’s Elizabeth Dekkers is the #3 seed and won silver in the event at 2023 Worlds, finishing behind McIntosh but ahead of Smith.

I’m watching the replay of the prelims and wondering if there is a chance they ever make a coherent schedule. 9 day meet and they have just 3 events one day and they are all 200s. So dumb.
