Day 9 Finals Event Lineup:
- Women’s 50 Free, Final
- Men’s 1500 Free, Final
- Men’s 4×100 Medley Relay, Final
- Women’s 4×100 Medley Relay, Final
The night will kick off with the women’s 50 freestyle where Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden enters as the top seed after swimming a 23.66 last night. That was an Olympic Record and the #3 performance of all-time. Sjostrom holds the World Record with a 23.61.
Gretchen Walsh of the US doubled up last night with semifinals of the 50 free and then swam the fly leg of the US mixed 4×100 medley relay that won gold in a new World Record. Walsh is the #2 seed tonight after a 24.17 in semifinals. Poland’s Kasia Wasick swam a 24.23 last night and will look to add Poland to the medal table.
Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen posted the top time in the men’s 1500 prelims yesterday morning. He enters with a 14:40.34 tonight and will look for the distance sweep as he already won the 800. Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri won bronze in the 800 already and won the 1500 at the 2016 Rio Games. He is the #2 seed tonight with a 14:42.56.
Bobby Finke of the US will search for the first (and only) individual gold for the men this week. He won the event in Tokyo and has won silver in the event at 2022 and 2023 Worlds. He will swim out of lane 7 with a 14:45.31 from prelims.
The men’s 4×100 medley relay is the first of the two relays tonight. The US won in a World Record in Tokyo and look to defend their title here as the #3 seed coming out of prelims. The top four teams yesterday morning were all in the 3:31 range so the lineups will play into a huge factor for this one. Italy won the individual 100 back and 100 breast this week but did not make the final. China’s Pan Zhanle will look to be the only individual gold medalist in his respective stroke swimming in the final.
Australia led prelims of the women’s 4×100 medley relay and out touched the US in Tokyo by 0.13 seconds. The US enters the final as the #4 seed and were just over a second and a half behind Australia in prelims. Both relays will most likely have new swimmers in the final. Australia’s Kaylee McKeown won the 100 back ahead of Regan Smith of the US so the relays look to be close at the first exchange. The US is also home to butterfly gold medalist Torri Huske who won silver in the 100 free as well and Gretchen Walsh who won silver in the 100 fly.
Oh no, SwimSwam photo curse strikes again.
Live recap?
Wr watch for sjostrom?
This whole session is gonna be lit.
Are 3 world records a possibility? The mile is loaded even without Short / Hafnaoui / Wellbrock. Sjostrom and the women’s medley relay seem likely WRs.
Hopefully Isaac (Australian MA) cooper goes 55 and then finally starts to focus on 100 back instead of messing around in the 50
Wiffen a lil weirdo in the dms lolz
Sun swimming the fly instead of wang. He did swim faster than Wang in the individual but not sure if that change will benefit china
Wang is sick with a high fever (probably caught COVID)
Unfortunate
Why GB not using Guy?
