2024 Speedo Summer Championships: Day 1 Preview & Scratches – McCulloh out of 800

2024 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day 1 Prelims Heat Sheet

Preview

Day One of the 2024 Speedo Summer Championships is about to get underway. This morning’s session will see the Women’s and Men’s 200 Fly and the Women’s and Men’s 100 Breast. The afternoon session will see the early heats of the Women’s 800 free and the Men’s 1500 free.

In the 200 fly, Michigan’s Hannah Bellard is the only entrant under 2:10, and she is your top seed with her 2:09.92. Bellard was a little slower at the Olympic Trials, finishing in 2:13.27, so she will be looking to bounce back after that. Looking to join her under 2:10 are Katie Forrester and Clare Watson, who are the 2nd and 3rd seeds, respectively.

The men’s 200 fly will be a tight contest as Trenton Julian, the top seed, is just .27 ahead of Jack Dahlgren. Dahlgren actually beat Julian in the 200 fly at Trials, swimming 1:56.63 to Julian’s 1:57.07.

Isabelle Odgers leads the women’s 100 breast, but the big storyline in the event is the #2 seed, Gabrielle Rose, who, at 46, set multiple personal bests at the Olympic Trials and made two semifinals. Another veteran also swimming in the event is Breeja Larson, who sits 6th in the pysch sheet.

The men’s 100 breast is a strong showing of youth. The top three seeds are all under the age of 20, and Yale’s Charlie Egeland leads the way with his seed time of 1:00.84.

The distance events tonight will be loaded. The top seeds, Jillian Cox and Charlie Clark, were both on the 2023 World Championships roster. While each made the finals at the recent Olympic Trials, they ultimately fell just short, with Cox finishing third in both the 400 and 800 free.

Scratches

The big-name scratching out of today’s event was Abby McCulloh. The Georgia Bulldog was the 5th see in the 800 free with a time of 8:36.06. At last month’s Olympic Trials, McCulloh placed 10th in the event at 8:36.23. She also appears in the pysch sheet in the 400 free and 1500 free.

The only other top eight seeds to scratch were Luke Barr and Nick Caruso. Barr, the 7th seed in the 100 breast, was entered with a time of 1:01.95, his personal best, which he achieved at the Olympic Trials, where he placed 39th. Caruso was the 14th seed in the 1500, but with the non-conforming times removed would have been the 8th seed. The Kentucky swimmer did not swim this event at trials, instead swimming the 200/400/800 free.
