2024 Speedo Summer Championships: Day 2 Preview & Scratches – #3 Isabelle Odgers out of 400 IM

2024 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

DAY 2 PRELIMS HEAT SHEET

PREVIEW

It’s a relatively short day on the schedule, as there are just two events on tap for the morning session. We start the action with the women’s and men’s 100 freestyle. The top seed in the 100 is 2021 Olympian and NCAA champion Bella Sims. The Florida Gator, who was very candid about her performance at Trials on the SwimSwam Podcast, is entered with the only sub-54 entry time with her seed of 53.73. Kristina Paegle and Kayla Wilson round out the top 3, and each will be looking to join Sims under that barrier.

On the men’s side, fellow NCAA star Quintin McCarty will have his hands full if he wishes to remain the top seed into tonight’s final, as his seed time of 48.95 is just .01 ahead of Grant House and just .04 in front of Jack Dahlgren, who finished runner-up last night in the 200 fly.

The session ends with the 400 IM. Sixteen-year-old Kayla Han leads the way in the women’s event with her entry time of 4:42.32. Han finished 4th in the 400 free at Olympic Trials in a new PB, but was 10th in this event, five seconds slower than her seed here.

Kentucky’s Levi Sandidge finished 9th at Trials and was just one spot away from making the final. While not much consolation, his time from trials was a personal best (4:17.61), making him the top seed in the last race of the morning. Looking to usurp him are Rex Maurer and Jake Magahey, the #2 and #3 seeds and the only two other entrants under the 4:20 barrier.

SCRATCHES

With just two events for each gender this morning, it was a rather quiet day on the scratch front. Kate Hurst of Scarlet Aquatics pulled out of the 100 free this morning as did Justina Kozan. Hurst’s withdrawal allows her to better her chances in the 400 IM, where she is now the 9th seed. She initially was the 10th seed, but last night’s runner-up in the 100 breaststroke, Isabelle Odgers, has scratched out her #3 seed in the IM.

On the men’s side, Luke Barr, the 11th seed, scratched out of the 100 free as did the #41 seed Richard Poplawski, who, like Hurst, will be looking to improve upon his 12th-place entry in the 400 IM.

ALL SCRATCHES

  • Women’s 100 Free: #18 Justina Kozan (56.33), #53 Kate Hurst (57.81 B)
  • Men’s 100 Free: #11 Luke Barr (50.23), #23 Warner Russ (51.19), #41 Richard Poplawski (51.81)
  • Women’s 400 IM: #3 Isabelle Odgers (4:46.90), #12 Rosie Murphy (4:50.85), #27 Iris Kim (4:56.24), #33 Madilyn McGlothen (4:57.43),
  • Men’s 400 IM: #37 Chris O’Grady (3:45.59 Y), #39 Tristan Prizler (4:33.18 L)
