Day 5 Prelims Heat Sheet
A pair of swimmers who have already placed top two this week have whittled down their schedules even further. Runner-up in the 400 IM and the defending Tokyo silver medalist in the 400 IM, Emma Weyant, has opted to not swim the 200 breaststroke this morning. The Florida Gator was entered in five events the meet, but only contested the 400 free placing 11th and the aforementioned IM.
Carson Foster was named to his first Olympic Team in the 400 IM on night 2. Foster was entered in the meet in seven events: the 400 free, the 200 free, the 400 IM, the 200 butterfly, the 100 free, the 200 back, and the 200 IM.
Foster no showed both the 400 and 200 frees, swam the 400 IM, and repeated the no-shows in the 200 fly and 100 free. Swimswam posted an article highlighting this fact, several tweets, and an op-ed disparaging the practice, unless necessary, but we cannot draw any specific conclusions about whether or not Foster had intended to no-show the event or had planned on scratching all along.
Jack Dahlgren has scratched out of the 200 backstroke this morning. After advancing to the semifinals of the 200 fly yesterday, Dahlgren no-showed the 100 free. Last night, he finished 5th in the semifinals of the 200 fly and will swim in the finals tonight.
See below for a full list of scratches:
Women’s 200 Breast
- #28 Emma Weyant
- #33 Maddy Huggins
Men’s 200 Backstroke
- #9 Carson Foster
- #19 Mikey Moore
- #34 Sean Green
- #43 Baylor Nelson
- #62 Luke Ellis
- #71 Jack Dahlgren
Women’s 200 Butterfly
- #13 Justine Kozan
Not sure where this list came from but Maddy Huggins did not scratch the 200 breast and instead had a great swim and is back seeded 9th in the semis. Sadly I missed taking time away from work to watch her race:( GO MADDY!!!
Ah, so he does know how to do it!
So Lydia announced she was not swimming and neither her nor her coach could turn in a scratch? IDIOTS
Was hoping that Carson would actually swim the 200 Back, but at least he’s being clear about it this time.
Guess he finally found the scratch table at Lucas Oil Stadium… If it was any harder than finding the 4-for-$25 hot dog stand on Sunday, I totally understand.
The hotdog stand was part of the bit. It was father’s day, and if there’s one thing fathers love, it’s trying to find things without asking for directions. The game was part of the reward.
Marchand not scratching his events
To be fair, Marchand doesn’t have to go all out on every one of his events to qualify. I think Carson’s smart to concentrate on the IM races.
Excellent choice in cover photo for the article. Glad the message got to him. Hope he is resting well for the 200im!
We did it, Joe!
[We shamed Foster’s coach into submitting a scratch instead of DNS!]
wow what the heck is that comment.
