2025 NAIA National Championships: Day 3 Ups/Downs

2025 NAIA Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving National Championships

Day 3

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Down” to B finalists.

St. Thomas earned 11 finals spots, 4 of which will be in championships and 7 in consolations. There wasn’t a great deal of movement among the top 6 teams but Bethel Indiana improved their psych sheet seedings by 20.5 points this morning, while St Ambrose (+19) and SCAD Savannah (+12) were also up by double digits. Olivet Nazarene, while off by -14, should jump Indiana Wesleyan and Milligan tonight to finish in 7th place in the team standings.

Keiser is on a tear and should finish the day 60 points ahead of their Day 3 tally from 2024. The Seahawks led Day 3 with 13 “A” and 2 “B” finalists (compared to 11/3 last year). It was a more balanced meet a year ago, though, with St Thomas and Cumberlands snagging 9 “A” final spots each. This time, Keiser is blowing out the competition, with St Thomas earning 6 “A” and 2 “B” spots and Milligan (4/5) and SCAD (4/3) trailing with only four swimmers in the top 8 tonight.

Because of St Thomas’s relay DQ on Day 1, the battle for second place in the team standings this year is an exciting dual between Milligan and SCAD Savannah, who are within 5 points of each other headed into tonight’s finals. Cumberlands, St Thomas, and newcomer William Carey are all within shooting distance of a fourth-place finish, but a lot can happen in the next two nights.
