Day 4 Prelims Heat Sheets
After already swimming on all of Florida’s relays as well as in two individual events, Julian Smith of Florida has scratched the 100 free on the final day of NCAAs.
Smith was the #21 seed coming into the event with an entry time of a 42.07. The #16 seed is a 41.77 so it would not take much to make it back but Florida has determined his relay value is more important.
On night 1, Smith helped Florida to a win in the 200 medley relay as well as a 4th place finish in the 800 free relay. On Thursday, he raced the 200 IM where he finished 11th overall. He also helped the team to a win in the 200 free relay. On Friday, he finished 7th in the 100 breast. He also swam breaststroke on the team’s 400 medley relay that eventually was disqualified. The disqualification still counts to his event limit.
The NCAA limits athletes to all five relays and two individual events or four relays and three individual events. With Smith’s scratch, it is assumed he will now be on the 400 freestyle relay tomorrow night for the Gators. They are the #2 seed coming into the event as they are only seeded behind Arizona State.
Although he is scratching the 100 free for tomorrow, the 200 IM was his lowest seed coming into the meet as he was the #23 seed there before finishing 11th.
Last year, Smith finished 21st in the individual 100 free but he was only used on two relays meaning he was allowed to swim three individual events.
Florida using the same four guys on all the short relays. Reminds me of Michigan ‘13 (I think?) where they killer relays but juuust barely covered all the bases.
It looks like Germonprez scratched as well, meaning he’ll rock the five relays.
