McCallie/GPS Aquatics’ Susanna LaRochelle has pledged her verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina. LaRochelle recently touched 2nd in both the 200 IM and 100 breast at last season’s Tennessee High School Champs. Swimming for the Girls Preparatory School in Tennessee, she split a 28.72 breast leg on their winning 200 medley relay and led off their 3rd place 400 free relay with a 51.09.
LaRochelle’s Top Times
100 back – 56.39/1:04.85
200y back – 1:59.97
100y breast – 1:03.39
100y fly – 56.40
200 IM – 2:02.56/2:22.23
All of the times listed above qualify LaRochelle for Winter Junior Nationals.
Her times in back, fly, and IM would’ve slated her in the middle of the deep UNC lineup last year, though her mark would be made darkest in the 100 breast, where her time of 1:03.39 would’ve been UNC’s fourth-fastest in an event that wasn’t their strongest last year. All of the Tar Heels’ best breaststrokers return this season, though they’re also all upperclassmen.
As UNC looks to reload their breaststroke group, LaRochelle will be a nice fit to help them along in that renovation. Her versatility also gives the Tar Heels plenty to work with, and her IM might be something she chooses to focus on along with breaststroke as she narrows her specialities in college.
LaRochelle’s times line up pretty darn nicely with those of incoming freshman Meghan Dupay (1:02 breast/2:03 IM), and joining those two in a growing class of 2020 for UNC is Brooke Bauer, Bryanna Cameron, Eireni Moshos, Erica Wirth, and Kylie Mihok.
