KAZAN, Russia — Three current and former members from the University of Florida swim team competed in day-two competition at the FINA World Championships Monday afternoon inside Kazan Arena.
UF senior Jess Thielmann represented the current Gators with a top-10 finish in the 1500-meter freestyle. Theilmann, a Newcastle, England, native, swam a time of 16:21.21 and finished 10th-overall.
Former UF standouts Conor Dwyer and Ryan Lochte also took part on Monday’s events; both competing in the 200-meter freestyle. Dwyer led the two in the prelims session, finishing seventh with a time of 1:46.73. Lochte finished 13th (1:46.73).
Later in the semifinals, Lochte took control of the field with a first-place finish after touching out at the 1:45.36 mark. The five-time American Olympic gold medalist barely edged second-place James Guy of Great Britain (1:45.43). Lochte won the 200-meter freestyle in 2011 and will have a chance to reclaim the crown tomorrow afternoon in the finals session.
Dwyer just missed the finals cut after finishing ninth overall with a time of 1:46.64. The Gators will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in day-three competition at the World Championships.
