Apostolos Christou downed broke his 3rd Greek Record of these European Championships, swimming a 52.77 in the men’s 100 backstroke semi-final this evening. Christou smashed the previous record, which was held at 53.03 from Aristeidis Grigoriadis from 2009.
Christou has been busy at these Championships thus far, having down the Greek Records in the men’s 100 free and the men’s 50 backstroke already. The Greek squad for these championships have been on a roll, having broken 5 men’s national records, and a women’s record through only the 3rd day of the meet.
Christou used his superior speed to win the first semifinal heat tonight, flipping roughly half a second ahead of the field. He will be the top seed for tomorrow’s final as well, where he’ll have an opportunity to win Greece it’s first Gold medal of these Championships.
The swim puts Christou 3rd in the world this year, behind Evgeny Rylov and Kliment Kolesnikov, who both represent Russia. Rylov will be in the mix in tomorrow’s final, while Kolesnikov missed out on the final, finishing 16th in semifinals.
Jan Cjeka, representing the Czech Republic, finished 9th overall in today’s semifinals, but broke the Czech Record in the race. Cjeka swam to a 54.03, downing the previous record of 54.16, which was held by Tomas Franta from 2019.
The Greek team is having a MEET.
