3 More Men Make Italian Olympic Squad, Pellegrini Adds 100 Free on Day 2

2016 ITALIAN ASSOLUTI NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND OLYMPIC TRIALS

  • Dates: Tuesday, April 19 – Saturday, April 23, 2016
  • Times: prelims 9:00 am, finals 5 pm
  • Location: Riccione, Italy (GMT +1, or 6 hours ahead of N.Y., 9 ahead of L.A.)
  • Results: Available

Italy has added two more men to it’s 2016 Olympic roster on day 2 of the Italian Championships, and Federica Pellegrini became the first woman to reach the nation’s Olympic standard despite already being qualified for the Games.

All individual medalists from last summer’s World Championships are pre-selected for the Italian Olympic team, and both swimmers in that category have now hit the qualifying standards anyways. Pellegrini did so in the 100 free today, while Gregorio Paltrinieri qualified in the 1500 free yesterday.

In addition, Matteo Rivolta, Piero Codia and Federico Turrini have qualified for the team. Rivolta and Codia did it in the 100 fly, while Turrini booked his ticket through the 400 IM.

Codia’s situation is a unique one. Event winners have to hit an Italian “A” or “B” selection time. Runners-up must hit the “A” time to qualify. Codia set a new Italian record in prelims, but then faded to second in the final and missed both the A and B cuts. However, his prelims swim was an “A” time, so if Italy accepts prelim swims for their cuts, he should be in under the current rules.

It’s also worth noting that Italy improved its standing for a 4×200 free relay berth on the men’s side. That’s the only relay Italy did not qualify for the Olympics out of last summer’s World Championships. The top 12 teams from Kazan are already in, and the next 4 top times worldwide will earn berths on May 31.

Italy was in line for the #2 spot heading into this meet, and they improved their time from 7:13.77 to 7:12.60 though they still sit #2. Currently, Brazil has the top spot locked up with a 7:11.15 from the 2015 Pan Ams. China (7:16.67) and Canada (7:17.33) are the other two in line for spots.

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

The selection priorities for the 2016 Olympics:

  1. Any individual medalists from the 2015 FINA World Championships
  2. Event winners at the Italian Championships who hit an Italian Olympic qualifying “A” or “B” time (see table below).
  3. Event runners-up at the Italian Championships who hit an Italian “A” cut time.
  4. In events where only 1 swimmer qualifies from the Italian Championships, the Federation will compare the runner-up times to those of the highest-finishing Italians at European Championships in May to allocate the 2nd spot, provided the swims are under the B standard.
  5. In events where no one qualifies at the Italian Championships, the Federation will take up to the two fastest Italians from Euros, provided both are under the B standard.
  6. If there are still spots available after Euros, the Federation will fill them with the top finishers at Sette Colli at the end of June, provided they swim under the B standard
  7. The federation will consider all of the directly qualified athletes to see if the roster can fill out its relay lineups. If not, athletes who hit a “C” standard at Italian Championships, European Championships and Sette Colli (in that priority order) will be considered for selection.

The last 15 metres in Pellegrini’s 100 free were really impressive and that’s quite promising for her main event (the 200 free)

About men’s 4×200 free, the winning time (performed by Aniene A) can be easily improved with Mitch D’Arrigo in the mix. Today D’Arrigo has swum the best leg with a 1.46.8.

I have a question.

According to the Selection Standars the priorities for the 2016 Olympics are:

5- In events where no one qualifies at the Italian Championships, the Federation will take up to the two fastest Italians from Euros, provided both are under the B standard.

1. The 100 fly and 400 IM the winners (Rivolta and Turrini) got the ticket… Read more »

If they swim the Italian Olympic qualifying “A” time in the final they are officialy qualified.
Codia broke the italian record (51.41) on the prelims but in the finals he did 51.72 so he’s not officialy qualified.
Marin did not swim the Italian Olympic qualifying “A” time so he’s not officaly qualified
They’ll get another change at the european championship. But if nobody else hit the Italian Olympic qualifying “A” time both Codia and Marin will eventually go to the olympics anyway.

She is an incredible athlete. Hopefully she finishes her career with a huge 200 free in Rio.

Federica went 53.78 in the 100 free. In textile, that’s a personal best by miles. She was 54.3 before this if I remind correctly.

It bodes well for her 200.

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
