The NFHS has added 3 new members to the Swimming & Diving Rules Committee – the organization that sets and alters rules for most high school swimming in the United States. Their first official meeting, the 2018 rules committee meeting, took place on March 18th-20th in Indianapolis, Indiana, where the committee reorganized two big sections of the rules book for clarity, as well as adding a few new rules (see those changes here).
Brad Alford, Kristen Daughters, and Penny DiPomazio joined the committee earlier this year. Committee members serve 4 year terms and are nominated by their state associations, with one coming from each of the 8 NFHS sections.
Alford is the director of sports and championships for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). Among other things, his duties includes overseeing day-to-day operations and championship operations for swimming & diving in the state.
Daughters is an English teacher and swim coach at Liberty High SSchool in Renton, Washington where she’s served for 21 years. Her team won 4 consecutive Washing Class 2A State Titles from 2014-2017.
DiPomazio was a four-year letter winner in both swimming and track and field at Southern Illinois, and has since spent 35 years as a coach. The last 25 have come in the Lubbock Independent School District, where she has served as the head high school and middle school coach. She currently serves as the diving rules interpreter for the UIL (the primary high school sports organization in Texas), and she is a former winner of the NFHS Swimming and Diving Official of the Year award.
