Following Seton Hall’s winter training trip to Puerto Rico, three members of their varsity men’s team were dismissed from the program. According to an article published by student newspaper The Setonian, senior captain Steve Hausmann was caught consuming alcohol on their trip, which is against program rules.

“I was drinking, I shouldn’t have been,” Hausmann said.

According to Seton Hall’s policy on alcohol (which is cited in the report mentioned above), “If a student-athlete is involved in an alcohol-related incident involving no legal consequences, the sport administrator supervising that program will determine if the circumstances warrant counseling, intervention and/or suspension of the student from practice and or competition.” Hausmann was sent home early from the trip as a result of this violation, and was dismissed from the team.

Junior Keith Carlino and another senior captain, Tim Bosse, were also dismissed from the team, though not until after the trip had concluded. According to the article on The Setonian, while these two swimmers were not in any contact with alcohol on the trip, they were still dismissed from the team. Carlino and Bosse were Hausmann’s roommates on the trip, though this is the only connection to the alcohol-related incident that is shown in the The Setonian report.

A similar incident occurred in 2015 with a different division I swim program. Last year, seven seniors on the Cincinnati men’s and women’s swim teams were sent home early from their Florida training trip for an alcohol-related incident. They were later dismissed from the team.
