30-year-old Hannah Miley of Great Britain has been named as the newest member of the International Swimming Leagues (ISL) Aqua Centurions. The Rome-based squad, captained by Federica Pellegrini, introduced 3-time Olympian Miley today on Instagram.
As far as her becoming a part of the ISL, Miley tells SwimSwam, “I’m so chuffed to have been asked to race. I really wanted to be part of the ISL and I guess with my ankle season I didn’t know if people would feel I was worthy enough to be on a team.
“The ISL is a great way for the swimming community to come together and for the swimmers to pull together in teams. We are used to racing as home nations, so to be racing alongside other nations and call them your teammates is very cool.
“It’s a great opportunity to race, to get excited about swimming and showcase our sport more! As an athlete who’s not funded, this is a great opportunity to try and earn a little bit of cash. I’m just really looking forward to getting to know my team and watch the swimmers pull together to do something that’s for us and enjoy it. It’s a great way to have fun with racing.”
Miley was uncharacteristically missing from this summer’s World Championships for Great Britain, battling back from ankle surgery undertaken late last year. After suffering from ankle pain for nearly 2 years, the 5’5″ pint-sized powerhouse finally underwent surgery in September of 2018 to remove an extra ligament found in her ankle. At the time, doctors told the Scottish star that it would take ‘probably around 6 months to a year’ before she could return to elite competition.
Ever the fighter, however, Miley was back in the water at the 2019 British Swimming Championships in April, where she made 3 individual finals. Although well off her best, Miley very respectably finished 3rd in the 400m IM in 4:42.68, 8th in the 200m breast in 2:30.14 and 6th in the 200m fly in 2:12.88.
Flash forward to the British Summer Championships in July and Miley already dropped her 400m IM time down to 4:40.98.
Miley capped off her comeback summer with a personal milestone-hitting time of 4:39.00 in the 400m IM for 4th place at the U.S. Nationals in August, cementing the Scot’s coming back to form with her sub-4:40 mark.
Now the Aberdeen native will join fellow Brit Freya Anderson on the Aqua Centurions lineup, balancing out the talents of other embers of the roster including Kaylee McKeown, Silvia Di Pietro, and Elena Di Liddo.
Lifetime Bests for Miley:
400 Free – 4:06.21 LCM; 4:00.39 SCM
