Through the 3rd day of the Speedo Sectionals meet in Huntington Beach, CA, Sandpipers of Nevada are still rolling, and look to be overwhelmingly likely to win both the men’s and women’s team titles. Pleasanton Seahawks’ women’s team had a big Saturday, but it would take a massive Sunday in order to catch the Sandpipers.
32.-year-old Brandon Fischer swam a 52.09 to win the men’s 100 breast, marking a new best time. Fischer’s previous top mark was a 52.34, which he established in a time trial at Winter Nationals back in 2019.
Sydney Lu, a 17-year-old out of Pleasanton Seahawks took the women’s 200 fly in 1:57.37, leading 13-year-old Kayla Han of La Armada Mirada (1:57.68). For Lu, the swim was just off her personal best of 1:56.82, which she swam earlier this year. Han, on the other hand, took 1.22 seconds off her previous best with the swim. The 1:57.68 makes Kayla Han the #3 13-year-old all-time in the SCY 200 fly, and ties her for 18th all-time in the 13-14 age group.
Both Lu and Han went on to race in the women’s 100 breast. Lu took 4th in the event, with a 1:03.54. That swim marked a personal best by 0.40 seconds. Han took 14th, swimming a 1:05.41. For Han, the swim marked a massive personal best, chopping over 3 seconds off her previous top time of 1:08.69.
Clovis Swim Club was all over the women’s 100 breast. 34-year-old Danielle Herrmann won the race handily, swimming a 59.21. The swim was only half a second off Herrmann’s personal best of 58.71, which she swam at a Sectionals meet in March of 2019, when she was 31. Fellow Clovis swimmer Mackenzie Miller, 17, touched 2nd in the race, swimming a 1:02.73. 15-year-old Clovis swimmer Hannah Marinovich clocked a new personal best of 1:02.99 for 3rd place.
CITI 14-year-old Isabella Brito won the women’s 200 free in 1:49.70, marking a huge new personal best. Brito entered the meet with a best time of 1:54.46, and with the 1:49.70, she improved by 4.76 seconds at this meet.
Bella Sims won the women’s 400 IM in a new personal best of 4:03.67. Sims, a Tokyo 2020 Silver medalist, had a previous best of 4:06.59 from the Las Vegas Super Final in December of 2020. She used her fly speed to get out to a 54.39 on the first 100, then split 1:02.17 on back, 1:11.61, and the freestyle star came home in 55.50.
Sandpipers 16-year-old Ilya Kharun is still rolling after his massive week in Austin at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships. Kharun won the men’s 400 tonight in a new best time of 3:50.16. His previous best of 3:55.75 was set just 5 weeks ago. Kharun used his fly speed to post a 51.23 on the first 100, then split 59.04 on back, 1:06.70 on breast, and 53.19 coming home on free. Fellow Sandpiper, 15-year-old Luke Ellis, also had a huge swim, taking 2nd in 3:53.50. Ellis entered the meet with a personal best of 4:04.25, marking a drop of 10.75 seconds for the 15-year-old.
Kharun also won the men’s 200 fly, clocking a 1:44.20. That performance was a bit off the 1:42.39 he swam to win the Winter Juniors West title last week.
