Yesterday marked the first day of Akron’s annual Zippy Invite, with Akron and Cornell coming out of the first day leading the women’s and men’s team standings respectively. Oakland University sits in 2nd in both team standings.
Akron blasted out of the gates, winning the women’s 200 free relay by 2.5 seconds, clocking a 1:30.63. Paulina Nogaj (22.67), Morgan Waggoner (22.25), Rachel Schiffli (23.06), and Sarah Waton combined to swim a new personal best in the event. From that relay, Nogaj went on to win the women’s 200 IM in 1:59.03, touching as the only swimmer in the field to break 2:00. Waggoner went on to win the women’s 50 free, finishing in 23.01. Waggoner had swum slightly faster in prelims, where she posted a 22.99.
Rocky Laabs of Cincinnati broke the meet record en route to winning the women’s 500 free. Laabs swam a 4:47.27, coming in just .07 seconds off the NCAA B cut. Cincy’s Noah Smith also broke the meet record in the men’s 500 free, where he swam a 4:25.81. Smith swam away with the race, touching first by 5 seconds. Rudy Aguilar of Oakland was in the B final, but was the only other swimmer in finals to crack 4:30, touching the wall in 4:29.84.
Paige Dacosta, a Cornell freshman, won the men’s 200 IM with a speedy 1:45.10, breaking yet another meet record. Dacosta was fast on the backstroke split, turning in a 26.15 on that 50. Cornell’s Jack Mahoney broke the meet record in the men’s 50 free, where he clocked a 19.95, taking the record under 2o seconds.
