4 Turkish Women Scratch From Day 4 Prelims At European Championships

2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Heading into day 4 of the European Swimming Championships, there are only 4 scratches among entrants ranked with the top 30 and they are all from members of the Turkish women’s team.

In the 200 breaststroke 26th seed Viktoria Gunes has scratched from the event while all 3 Turkish entrants in the 1500 freestyle, Merve Tuncel, Deniz Ertan, and Ece Tanriverdi have scratched from their respective 5th, 9th, and 16th spots. Both Gunes and Tuncel are the Turkish record holders in the events that they scratched with Gunes holding an NR of 2:19.64 from back in 2015 and Tuncel a 16:03.23.

Along with the Turkish record, Gunes’ 2:19.64 is also the current world junior and European junior record in the event. She swam that time back in 2015 but was entered in this year’s European Championships with a 2:27.67 which she swam at the 2019 World Championships which gave her a 20th place finish.

It’s not yet clear why all 4 Turkish women scratched their day 4 prelims or if the reasons are connected. A number of Turkish swimmers are still slated to swim in the session including Baturalp Uenlue in the men’s 200 free, Uemitcan Gueres in the men’s 50 butterfly, and Ekaterina Avramova in the women’s 100 back.

There are no top 30 scratches to report in the men’s 200 free, women’s 100 back, or men’s 50 butterfly.

My guess – it’s related to the 4*200 F session – towards Olympic quota , allowing team member to better rest before Friday
