Dr. Ernestine Friedl Levy Harmel at the Duke building named for her
Blue Devil blood has run through the veins of both sides of Coleman Kredich’s family about as far back as anyone can remember, so it’s no wonder he made a verbal commitment to swim for Duke University’s class of 2023.
“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to Duke University! I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for everything they have done for me. It means a lot to me to attend my parents’ alma mater. Go Blue Devils!”
Kredich will be a fourth-generation Blue Devil in the fall of 2019. Given that his parents met and married at Duke, you could say he owes the Blue Devils something. Check out this legacy:
- Generation 1: Dr. Ernestine Friedl Levy Harmel (great grandmother), renowned anthropologist, first female Dean of Arts and Sciences and Trinity College at Duke, professor at Duke, has a building named after her. Married to Dr. Harry Levy (great grandfather), a guest professor at Duke in the 70s.
- Generation 2: Dr. Deborah Kredich (grandmother), Chief of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology, Program Director of the Residency Training and Associate Dean of the School of Medicine at Duke, attended Duke as undergraduate. Dr. Nicholas Kredich (grandfather), physician/scientist/professor at Duke, attended Duke on a track scholarship, also played football and was on the team that went to the Orange Bowl in 1955.
- Generation 3: Nicholas Matthew Kredich (father), Duke ’87 (graduated ’88 due to testicular cancer bout extending time at Duke), swim team and columnist for Duke Chronicle. Kimberley Lathrop Kredich (mother), Duke ’89, Duke Cheerleading, Duke all-female a cappella group “Out of the Blue.” Dr. Deborah Lathrop (aunt), Duke ’87.
- Generation 4: Coleman Kredich, USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, junior at West High School in Knoxville,Tennessee.
Coleman Kredich swims for Knoxville West and Tennessee Aquatics. He specializes mainly in sprint freestyle, and in February he was runner-up in the 50 free (20.45) and took third in the 100 free (45.34) at the 2018 TISCA TN High School Championships.
Nick Kredich
He scored a trio of best times at Southern Premiere Invitational in the 200 free (1:40.29), 100 back (54.71), and 200 back (1:57.50). In January he improved his times in the 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM.
