4x Mississippi High School Champion Kenny Thomas Commits to Cleveland State

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kenny Thomas, a senior at St. Joseph Catholic School in Madison, Mississippi, has announced his intention to swim at Cleveland State University next fall. Thomas is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American who specializes in sprint back, fly, and free.

“I chose Cleveland State because it felt like the perfect fit and because I believe the coaches and the swimmers will push me to be the best I can be in and out of the pool.”

Thomas won the 100 fly and 100 back at the MHSAA Class 1 (1-5A) Swimming Championships in both his junior (52.21/52.75) and senior (50.73.50.64) seasons with the St. Joseph Bruins. In club swimming, he represents the Mississippi Makos Swim Team. At the 2020 Mississippi Swimming LSC State Championships in February, he placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in everything he swam: 50/100 free, 100 back, 100 fly, and 200 IM and he updated his lifetime bests in the 50/100 back and 200 IM. He also competed at Cary Sectionals this spring (prelims SCY, finals LCM) and notched PBs in the SCY 100 free and 100 fly.

Last summer, between Mississippi Long Course State Championships and Southern Zones in Tulepo, he improved in the 50/100 free, 50/100 back, 50/100 fly, and 200 IM. He placed 3rd in the 50 back (27.89) and 3rd in the 50 fly (25.77) and finished 9th in the 50 free with a Winter Juniors cut of 24.22.

Top SCY times:

  • 50 back – 23.40
  • 100 back – 50.42
  • 50 free – 20.99
  • 100 free – 46.65
  • 50 fly – 23.83
  • 100 fly – 50.53

The Vikings will be looking to replace seniors Dominic Poletta, who won the 50 free at Horizon League Championships with 19.71, and Jack Macdonald, who placed 5th (20.10). Junior Ryan Sedlak will be the fastest returner; he was 7th with 20.42. Poletta also won the 100 fly (46.55) and was joined by two more seniors in the final: Matthew Martin and DJ Arslanian. Junior Dominik Niedzialek was runner-up in the 100 back (48.23) while Martin took 8th (49.49).

Horizon League scores to 16, although for some reason the host only published results for top 8 this season. According to results on Meet Mobile he would have finaled in 100 back and is close in other events. Cleveland State is definitely a team on the rise, both men and women. Congrats on joining a great program.
