I remember watching Summer swim in ‘92 and in the 200 fly willing Susie to hang on, but unable to be sad when she won!
I’ve always found it a weird thing when the media lead with “You must be disappointed” when someone has swum a PB and won a silver or bronze medal.
In Australia it has often felt like it’s gold or worthless, which is really not a helpful way to frame things.
Is it bad that I associate her more with “Figure it Out” than with swimming lol
Ha. Same, but I think that maybe speaks to our age more than anything.

I was there in 1992 when Summer won. She did look more relieved than overjoyed. But keep in mind the situational influence: the United States women were losing one tight individual race after another in those Games. It was seemingly happening every day. Talking about color barriers is diver Sammy Lee. I don’t know what brought Sammy Lee from LA county where there were some Asian people to Orange County were it was white people from the Midwest and south with some Mexican people or a few Japan people. It could be because they needed doctors fast population growth in the 1950’s or cheaper housing. He was block from buying a home in Garden Grove and end up in Anaheim. Well, someone talk him into a swim school and he coached Bos Webster a gold medalist in diving in 1960.
Great interview by Summer Sanders. Great emphasis on mental health and post Olympic Blue. THANK YOU!
I felt bad to hear about her “relived” experience winning the Gold Medal, instead of “feeling of Joy.” So much expectation being put on the athletes. That is just unfair.
Everyone wants to win. There is only one winner (except when a tie occurs). That is fact. Anything less is less than the best. The sky is blue, gravity is real and winners are winners!
Congratulations, Summer Sanders..!!
