5 Big Things From Day 2 of Arena Pro Swim – Indianapolis

2016 ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES AT INDIANAPOLIS

#1 DAVID PLUMMER IS ON TOP OF HIS GAME

There’s no lack of depth for Team USA in the men’s 100 backstroke, and we could see an incredibly fast 100 back final at Olympic Trials in just a few weeks. One of the top contenders for a spot in Rio, David Plummer, powered his way to a 52.40 to win the event in Indianapolis tonight. Plummer’s time clipped his previous lifetime best of 52.51, and maintains his number 2 spot in the world rankings behind Australia’s Mitch Larkin.

#2 LEAH SMITH MOVES UP IN 400 FREE WORLD RANKINGS

Virginia’s Leah Smith has been on a roll at this meet, and she kept it going tonight with a lifetime best 4:03.33 to win the women’s 400 free tonight. Smith’s time moves her up to 2nd in the World Rankings for this year, behind only Katie Ledecky‘s 3:59.54.

#3 OLIVIA SMOLIGA SWIMS LIFETIME BEST 100 BACK

Georgia’s Olivia Smoliga, who has been having a stellar year so far, posted a new lifetime best of 59.41 in the women’s 100 back. That time makes Smoliga the 7th fastest woman in the world this year, and bodes well for her chances at a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Notably, Missouri’s Hannah Stevens was also under 1:00 today, placing 2nd in 59.67.

#4 MELANIE MARGALIS TAKES 3RD WIN OF THE MEET

After pulling off an impressive double last night, Melanie Margalis continued her trend of wins with her swim in the women’s 200 breast tonight. Margalis swam a lifetime best 2:24.68 to win the event, touching out Indiana’s Lilly King, who placed 2nd in 2:24.88.

#5 ARIANNA VANDERPOOL-WALLACE POSTS SUB-25 50 FREE IN SEASON

Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, an Auburn alum and Bahamian Olympian, blasted a 24.84 to win the women’s 50 free. At the 2012 London Olympics, she became the first ever Bahamian woman to make an Olympic final. Her lifetime best is a 24.31 from 2015 Pan Ams, and she’ll be looking to bring home the first Olympic medal ever won by a Bahamian woman this summer.

Arianna looking great. Hopefully she gets some guidance from French coach and Auburn Alum Lionel Moreau who had her flying in past international meets! Good luck!
