Call them cheesy, but motivational quotes exist because…well, they work. Most swimmers can relate to drawing upon a favorite quote to push through their own mental barriers during a challenging workout. This week, we’ve provided 5 of our favorite quotes that can serve as a boost during a painful sprint set, or a mantra to get you through a seemingly endless distance workout.

1. START WITH THE END IN MIND

We like this quote because it can be applied to every measurement of performance. Whether you have your sights set on a championship meet, an open water swim, a triathlon or general fitness, be sure to start each workout with your end goal as a personal focal point.

2. THE REAL WORKOUT STARTS WHEN YOU WANT TO STOP

When you get to the edge of your body’s limits, keep pushing. Real change doesn’t come without a challenge.

3. YOUR BODY WON’T GO WHERE YOU MIND DOESN’T PUSH IT

The body can endure almost anything – usually, it’s the mind that needs convincing.

4. DON’T COUNT THE LAPS. MAKE THE LAPS COUNT

Whether you are kicking, drilling or pounding out the yards, stay present in your workout. It is all too easy to mentally check out when you are in the pool for upwards of 90 minutes at a time – challenge yourself to keep the quality high from warm up to cool down.

Last but not least…

5. HARD WORK BEATS TALENT WHEN TALENT STOPS WORKING HARD

Our favorite mantra – the perfect piece positive self talk that reminds you that hard work and grit goes a long way in the pool.

About FINIS

Founded in 1993 in Northern California, FINIS was started by John Mix and Olympic Gold Medal Swimmer Pablo Morales. The Monofin and the Swimmer’s Snorkel were the first products they developed for the US market; afterwards, they continued to focus on creating training tools for swimmers and coaches worldwide. FINIS products are currently available in over 65 countries and are used by US and International Olympic teams, elite triathletes, and fitness swimmers. Innovative research and design is FINIS’ highest priority. This dedication has resulted in truly unique products such as: the Swimmer’s Snorkel, which is recognized as the paramount tool to improve a swimmer’s technique, the SwiMP3 that uses bone conduction technology to play music instead of usingear buds, and the Z2 Zoomers fins, which demonstrate an intimate understanding of swimming musculature, hydrodynamics, and engineering.
