53.8 100 Butterflier Claire Maiocco Commits To Michigan

maiocco

The Michigan women will add depth to their fly group next season, as Trinity Prep Aquatics’ Claire Maiocco has given her verbal commitment to join the Wolverines next fall. Maiocco will make the move to Ann Arbor from Winter Park, Florida after graduating from Trinity Preparatory School.

Maiocco, a sprint free/fly specialist, was a 2-time finalist at last season’s Florida High School 1A State meet. There, she placed 4th in the 50 free and 3rd in the 100 fly. She was also the Class 1A Region 2 champion in both of those events.

On her commitment:

I’m really excited about going to Michigan next fall. With great coaches, a great team, and world class academics, I can’t wait to see where my college career takes me!

During her high school swimming career, Maiocco has collected 10 NISCA All-American honors. In addition, she’s also been named an Academic All-American twice. In total, she has 3 medals from the Florida High School 1A State meet (1 silver, 2 bronze) and has been a finalist 5 times.

Maiocco’s Top Times:

Event Best Time
50 free 23.30
100 free 50.93
100 fly 53.87
100 back 56.79

With Maiocco’s personal best 53.87 in the 100 yard fly, she’s got a good shot at being an A-finalist at the Big Ten Championships as a freshman. Last season, her time would’ve missed the top 8 by less than a tenth. She’s also just outside of scoring range in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

At Michigan, Maiocco will train butterfly and sprint free alongside Vanessa Krause, a 53-mid 100 flier who is currently in her freshman season with the Wolverines. She’ll also be training with All-American Siobhan Haughey, a Big Ten champion and NCAA scorer in the 100 free.
