59.8 Breaststroker Sofia Carnevale Transfers from UNLV to Georgia

Sofia Carnevale, a Canadian who just finished her second season with UNLV, has announced her decision to transfer to the University of Georgia.

Carnevale is a strong breaststroker who will provide much-needed breaststroke speed to the Bulldogs, who have had trouble nailing down elite breaststroke talent of late.

TOP TIMES

  • 100y breast – 59.87
  • 200y breast – 2:11.89
  • 100y free – 23.36
  • 100y free – 50.78

Carnevale will be a huge boost to the Bulldogs next season. Last year, their top breaststroker was Caitlin Casazza at 1:00.87 — Carnevale is nearly a full second faster than that. She would have also ranked 2nd last season behind only Meaghan Raab in the 200 breast.

Carnevale would have A-finaled in the 100 breast at the 2018 SEC Championships, and she would’ve C-finaled in the 200 breast. More importantly, Carnevale is right on path to score at NCAAs in the 100 breast, though she may need to improve a few tenths to make it next year.

UGA has SwimSwam’s #2 ranked incoming class, and they were ranked #2 without a single breaststroke specialist. Now, with Carnevale, UGA’s medley relays will be much more competitive and dangerous next year, and she has a chance to be an NCAA scorer in her first season with the Bulldogs.

Hey Karl (& Co.)!
How about SwimSwam maintaining a living document tracking all the transfers and including a link to it in each announcement?
Something simple like name, class, prior school and new school.

Thoughts?

That’s a good idea! I will talk to my co-writers about it : )

Sofia got some pretty coaching from Ben, Pat, Karissa and Igor at UNLV to make the NCAA cut.

Great get. They really needed that, with all the good incoming freshman non of them were breastrokers either. Go Dawgs!!!

Great pickup for Georgia! This coupled with their income freshman class will hopefully get them back on the right track!

In all honesty, I’m surprised that there hasn’t been more (if any, seemingly) discussion about Georgia’s performance at NCs this year in comparison to years and graduating classes past.
