5x Rhode Island HS Record-holder Harry Homans Commits to North Carolina

Harry Homans of Barrington, Rhode Island has announced his verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s class of 2023. Homans is the son of Fritz Homans, an All-American swimmer for the Tar Heels from 1976 to 1980.

“The combination of the swim program, academics, and campus culture is why I chose UNC. I cannot wait to join a great team with a great culture in the Fall of 2019 and I am excited to continue the Homans legacy at Carolina. Go Heels!”

Homans attends Barrington High School, from which he will graduate this year. He told SwimSwam, “I am taking a gap year next year, so I will enroll at UNC in the Fall of 2019. My plans are to train and compete with Bluefish and take some local community college courses.”

Unusual to do a gap year and take courses at community college and do swim training. Wonder why.

Probably was not offered enough money and maybe wanted to sharpen his times in order to get more? Or maybe just a break.

I don’t know, but I wish more kids would do a gap year (regardless of swimming prospects). In my experience, those kids tend to have a bit more direction and focus than the ones who have been shuffled straight from high school to college, and I imagine it helps quite a bit in avoiding burnout.

Agreed. Surprised that these–along with doing a postgrad year at a prep school–aren’t considered more often in the swimming community for recruits as options!
