Wheaton Women Win Season Opener

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women’s swimming and diving team opened up its 2013-14 season with an 187-53 dual meet victory over Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon at Balfour Natatorium.

The Lyons posted first place finishes in 11 different events as seniors Adrianne Madden (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and Nina Lanctot (Chatham, Mass./Home Schooled) led the way with a pair of individual victories and one relay win.

Madden touched-first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.13 and also claimed first place honors in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.34-seconds. Lanctot was first overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.36 and 200-yard breaststroke in 2:40.87. The duo also teamed up with sophomore Courtney Leach (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) and junior co-captain Cara Morris (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) in the 200-yard medley relay for a first place time of 1:52.59.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Morris cruised to a first place finish in 1:03.83, while Wheaton took the top-3 spots in the event as junior co-captain Kelsey White (Bath, Maine/Morse) finished second (1:09.26) and classmate Callie Renfrew (Vacaville, Calif./The Webb Schools) was third (1:13.18).

Leach added to her win in the 200-yard medley relay with a first place showing in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57-seconds flat. Freshman Lindsey Thomsen (Gorham, Maine/Gorham), who finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (59.64), touched-first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.26.

Sophomores Skyler Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) and Helen Grant (Suffield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) rounded out the list of swimmers who posted first place finishes as Dean-Lee won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:25.59 and Grant touched-first in the 200-yard IM in 2:23.23.

In her first-ever collegiate diving competition, freshman Liz Mason (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) compiled a score of 126 points for first place overall in the one-meter dive.

Wheaton returns to action at the Batterman Relays, hosted by MIT, on Saturday, October 26 at 1 p.m.
