Local swimmers, Parker Macho, age 9, and Mason Turner, age 11 of Eastern Iowa Swimming Federation each broke Iowa Swimming, Inc. (ISI) state records at the recent Mallards Winter Long Course Invitational swim meet in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. Macho broke records in the 200-meter Freestyle, 400-meter Freestyle, 200-meter Individual Medley and 100-meter Backstroke for the 9-10 age group. Turner broke the 200-meter Butterfly record for the 11-12 age group.
Macho’s 200-meter Freestyle time of 2:20.07 beats out the previous record-holder Dylan Moffatt from Blackhawk County who set the record in 2013 with a time of 2:20.30. His 400-meter Freestyle time of 4:55.95 beats out previous record-holder Oliver Martin of Iowa City who set the record at 4:57.88 in 2009. His 200-meter Individual Medley time of 2:38.34 beats out old record-holder (and team-mate) Forrest Frazier’s time of 2:40.97 set in 2013. And Macho’s 100-meter Backstroke time of 1:14.69 beats the previous record by Forrest Frazier of 1:14.71. Macho now holds four long course state records and one short course state record.
Turner’s 200-meter butterfly time of 2:27.17 edges out previous record holder Sam Peng also of Cedar Rapids who had a time of 2:27.75 set in 2015. This is Turner’s first state record.
Macho is currently ranked in the top 10 in 10 of the 12 events that 9-year-olds are ranked in nationally. Turner is ranked in the top 10 in 9 of the 18 events that 11-year-olds are ranked in nationally. Macho is currently 1st in IMX scores among all 9-year-olds in the United States and Turner is ranked 8th in IMX scores among all 11-year-olds. IMX scores are calculated using PowerPoints for each stroke event. PowerPoints is a USA Swimming scoring system which allows for comparison of the quality of performances across strokes, distances and events as well as between age groups.
Both Macho and Turner have been swimming competitively with the Eastern Iowa Swimming Federation (formerly Cedar Rapids Aquatics Association) since the age of 5. Head coach and owner Megan Oesting said “These young boys are really stepping outside the box breaking records with over a year to go in their respective age groups. Most swimmers barely get under records right before their age out birthday, so these two are well ahead of schedule in that regard. They’ve been friends for a long time and are able to push each other and support each other in a really special way. I’m thankful for the way they help each other succeed. Their work ethic and drive makes the team better as well and sets a culture of excellence and possibilities. I am excited to see what they will do over the next year.”
Parker is the son of Jeff and Tara Macho of Cedar Rapids. Mason is the son of Brian and Shelly Turner, also of Cedar Rapids.
Eastern Iowa Swimming Federation (EISF) is a year-round competitive USA swimming program owned and operated by champion swimmer and coach Megan Oesting. The team includes branches in Cedar Rapids, Muscatine and Burlington. Oesting won three Junior National titles, the first of which was at the age of 13, and was a member of the National Junior Team at age 16 representing the USA in Paris and East Berlin. At the age of 17 she won gold and silver in the Pan Am games in Cuba and was ranked 18th in the world for the 100 freestyle. She was an all-American at UCLA as a starter and scoring member of the UCLA National Champion water polo team. In 2010 Oesting won the USA Swimming Masters Nationals in the 50 and 100 free both in her age group and overall, with the fastest times in the 50 and 100 freestyle events for all age groups. She was ranked #1 in the world for the age group in those races that year. For more information about EISF visit www.EasternIowaSwimming.com.
Wonder if they offer private lessons
Is this a press release or an advertisement for her club???
Also, isn’t Forrest Frazier with IFLY?
Forrest Frazier as well as many others (for example, Ruby Martin) have left IFLY and transferred to EISF (lowkey salty because IFLY will always be my home -sorry, it’s just weird having people that have been in the club I’m in for so long leave)
