Rebecca Meyers (USA) Smashes the S13 400-Meter Freestyle World Record

After just nearly missing the world record yesterday in the women’s S13 100m Butterfly Rebecca Meyers showed up this morning a little extra motivated.  In this morning’s heats of the 400m Freestyle Meyers went out strong in a time of 2:11.34 in the first 200 of her 400 and charged home in a 2:14.03 with a final time of 4:25.31.  Canada’s Valerie Grand’Maison set the previous record in 2008 at the Beijing Games with a time of 4:28.64.  Meyers didn’t leave it to chance today; she came in looking like she was on a mission and she not only broke the six-year-old world record, she smashed it by nearly three and a half seconds.

Grand’Maison announced her retirement early this week.  After an incredibly successful career in the water Grand’Maison is no longer present to defend her world record leaving Meyers as the new leader in the women’s S13 400m Freestyle.

Look for Meyers tonight, as I wouldn’t be surprised if she comes in faster than this morning breaking the record twice in one day.

The total world record count for this competition is now and five and counting.
