What Was Nathan Adrian Focusing On During Warmups at U.S. Nationals in Irvine?

Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian won the 100 free and placed 2nd in the 50 free at the 2014 U.S. National Championships last week.

TeamUSA.org, the United States Olympic Committee’s website, has been running a series where they’re going “behind the scenes” with Adrian, and their latest episode catches up with he and his coach Dave Durden between his swims on the first and last days of competition.

Adrian and Durden specifically talk about how he handles the unique challenges of this meet, including warming up outdoors, and what he does in the three days with no racing in Irvine.

Thank you for posting. Interesting that he does full out sprinting (though probably limited) two days before the 50.

for a 50, I don’t think that’s too uncommon, specially with enough rest time and warm down. like you said though it was probably limited. I know when I was training we would do a full out sprint 2-3 days before the race. after that day though you’d only do a 50 if you were swimming the 100, or a 25 to the feet if you were going the 50. but the warm down and stayin rested is the key, and we wouldn’t do repeats, maybe twice if you really felt like you needed to fix something.

That is such a well done behind the scene coverage !!! Wow , the images in replay within Nathan’s training sessions are sublime . I have never seen him from this angle before . Thank you guys for this pearl .
It really involves so many details to keep in awareness for those guys to get ready for the Big Meets of the year . Impressive within the core of high Level swimming .
I hope they will be more episodes covering Nathan’s training or others Us swimmers pretty soon .
