The Nicaraguan Swimming Federation released a three-swimmer roster for the 2014 Short Course World Championships which will take place in Doha, Qatar this December.
The team includes two men and one woman who were chosen following the 2014 Nicaraguan short course nationals, which were held from the 19th to the 21st of September.
The three teenagers were the only three to meet the qualifying criteria, and broke several records in the process. The only female on the roster, Fabiola Espinoza, broke the 400m freestyle record with a time of 4:50.81 bettering the previous national mark that had been held since 2007.
Guillermo Lopez, 19, swam an 8:41.01 to break his own national record in the event. The remaining swimmer to qualify for the roster, 16-year-old Miguel Mena, broke two age-group records in the 15-17 year-old category with a 24.16 in the 50 free and a 25.95 in the 50m fly.
Arguably the greatest Nicaraguan swimmer, Daria Torres, didn’t compete in the national championships due to an injury she received recently after being subject to an accident on the road, and will not be participating at worlds in December.
