World Cup Money Update: Seventeen grand for Hosszu, seven for Shields out of Hong Kong

Katinka Hosszu and Tom Shields were the top money-earners at the Hong Kong World Cup this week, with the former racking up $17,000 and the latter $7,500.

That completes a big weekend for Shields in which he nearly matched his total earnings from the first two World Cup events, excluding the cluster bonus. Shields led all men with his $7,500 – Thomas Fraser-Holmes and defending series champ Chad Le Clos each brought in $6,000.

Shields still runs fourth in the overall money lists, though, behind Le Clos and Daniel Gyurta (who benefited from big world record bonuses early in the tour) and Fraser-Holmes, who earned a bigger bonus out of the first cluster by $10,000 and now leads by just about that amount.

Hosszu’s $17,000 looks impressive, but it’s actually her lowest amount out of the three World Cups so far. That’s because this was her first World Cup of 2014 without a world record and the resulting $10,000 bonus. She actually earned less than half the money that she took home from Doha, where she cracked three different world records.

It seemed like Hosszu took a bit of a different approach in Hong Kong, entering every single event and swimming most of them. That allowed her to earn money in 12 different events, a series-high for her, but the collective fatigue prevented her from getting world records and ultimately lowered her earnings considerably. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of strategy Hosszu puts into play later this week in Moscow and if she can add any world records there.

Both Inge Dekker and Alia Atkinson brought in $6,000 apiece, and sit second and third, respectively, in the series money list.

The next round of cluster bonuses come into effect after Moscow’s World Cup this weekend.
