UMBC men sweep weekly CCSA awards, Liberty’s Kendall Hough wins women’s award

Men’s press release:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (TheCCSA.com) – UMBC’s Gregor Sporlein (Bamberg, Germany) has been named CCSA Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while teammate Ryan Green (Ellicott City, Md.) is the men’s diver of the week for meets contested Oct. 6-12, 2014, the League announced Tuesday.

Gregor won three events in the Retrievers’ win against Rider (158-125). He won the 200 free (1:40.66), the 50 free (21.10) and the 100 free (46.09). His 400 free relay team also clocked the fastest time of the event in an exhibition race (3:09.12). In the 50 free, the sophomore won by 0.54 seconds over teammate Bryan Mattingly.

Green took home a win on the boards in the 1 meter dive. He scored 276.15 for the Retrievers, which was nearly 15 points ahead of second place. He also competed in the men’s 3 meter as an exhibition event and earned a score of 287.55.

CCSA Men’s Swimming and Diving returns Saturday, Oct. 18.

Women’s press release:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (TheCCSA.com) – Liberty University’s Kendall Hough (Woodbridge, Va.) has been named the CCSA Women’s Swimmer of the Week for meets contested Oct. 6-12, 2014, the League announced Tuesday.

Hough recorded three first-place finishes last weekend as she won both the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, and swam leadoff on Liberty’s victorious 200 medley relay as the Lady Flames defeated both Oregon State and Seattle. She also anchored for Liberty’s 400 free relay, which swam the fastest time among all teams at the meet as an exhibition (3:29.46). Hough led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 backstroke, clocking 56.34. She later swam 51.02 for first place in the 100 free, leading another 1-2-3 sweep for the Lady Flames. All of her times this weekend were the fastest by a Lady Flame in those events so far this season.

Also nominated for CCSA Swimmer of the Week were: Emily Werth (UNC Asheville), Michelle Case (Campbell) and Lana Nguyen (Incarnate Word).

CCSA Women’s Swimming and Diving action returns Thursday, Oct. 16 as North Florida takes on Vanderbilt and West Florida in Pensacola, Fla.
