Sprint freestyler Mary Roberts has verbally committed to the University of California – Santa Barbara, giving the Gauchos a high-upside prospect in the sprints.
Roberts was the CIF San Diego section champion in both the 50 and 100 freestyles last spring for Cathedral Catholic High School. But making that feat even more impressive is that Roberts is a relative newcomer to swimming.
The sprinter only started swimming high school as a freshman, then made her club swimming debut the following summer. That means she’s been swimming club only barely longer than two years, and has already risen to section champ status in California’s talented swimming scene.
Roberts now competes for the College Area Swim Team, and will return to defend her CIF titles this spring as a senior for Cathedral Catholic.

“I chose Santa Barbra because it seemed like such a great fit for me,” Roberts said. “I loved the beautiful campus location and I felt so welcomed.
“I am so blessed to have such an amazing opportunity and I cant wait to start this new chapter in my life. I am so proud and honored to be able to call myself a baby Gaucho!”
