Texas Women Get Verbal Commitment from Washington’s Alyssa Cook

Alyssa Cook, a senior at North Thurston Public High School in Lacey, Washington, has made a verbal commitment to the University of Texas Longhorns for the 2015-16 season. A two-time 4.0 Academic All-American, she plans to study pharmacy at UT.

Cook swims for Ash Milad at King Aquatic. She has national time standards in IM, breast, and back and was selected to National Select Camp in 2012. Her top times are:

400y IM: 4:17.07               400m IM: 4:55.04 (.05 off 2016 Olympic Trials)
200y IM: 2:02.25               200m IM: 2:20.98
200y breast: 2:15.60        200m breast: 2:38.62
100y breast: 1:03.25        100m breast: 1:13.74
200y back: 2:09.39            200m back: 2:20.24

Cook will have an immediate impact on Texas’ results at Big 12 Championships; her 400 IM and 200 breast are already A-final-ready times, and her 100 breast would score in the B-final. The Longhorns’ will be looking to fill in for their fastest breaststroker, Gretchen Jacques, who is a senior this year. Cook will be a good training partner for sophomore Madisyn Cox, who had a very successful freshman season last year.

Cook joins one of the most impressive recruiting classes we’ve seen so far, with commitments from Brooke Hansen, Joanna Evans, Nora McCullagh, Olivia Anderson, Quinn Carrozza, and Remedy Rule.

“Alyssa enjoyed the atmosphere in Austin so much that she called Carol and gave her a verbal as soon as she got home from her visit.” –Maureen Cook

Well Gretchen Jacques isn’t the only top notch breastroker on the team, they have Bethany Leap – Alyssa Cook will be joining. Great class for Texas. Only other dream for this team would be nabbing Weitzeil. That would be epic.

Rumor is Weitzeil is narrowed to AZ or Cal….too bad. Would have been great for the Longhorns! Can still hope rumor is wrong.

Capitani is building quite a monster class here, Cook will be a very welcome addition to a fast improving & balanced squad! I’m impressed.

As for the nation’s top recruit after Ledecky, these rumors may have a foundation of truth embedded somewhere, but only Weitzeil truly knows where her heart lies.

Weitzeil’s taking her final recruiting trip to USC this weekend, where Salo and the women of Troy will be fighting on to woo her hard at their 2-day invite. This could include bringing out the big guns like sprinter aka breaststroker Hardy, who was a mentor of hers at Pan Pacs.

Trojans do have a delicate juggling act on their hands if they want to make the big play… Read more »
