Mahwah, NJ … The College of New Jersey men’s swimming and diving team delivered a convincing victory in its season opener as they defeated Ramapo College 163-92 in Ramapo’s Bradley Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (1-0) took their first step towards defending its New Jersey Athletic Conference title with the triumph. TCNJ has won six straight championships and the win also marks the 25th consecutive conference win since the NJAC re-established swimming and diving as a conference sport in 2008-09.
Establishing a lead from the start, senior Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph’s), junior Joseph Dunn (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood), sophomore Vince Masciandaro (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee),and sophomore Jin Roh (Tenafly, NJ / Tenafly) took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a winning time of 1:37:25.
Reigning NJAC Rookie of the Year Ryan Gadjzisz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and sophomore Scott Vitabile (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) shined in the 200-yard freestyle with Gadjzisz winning the event in 1:44:42 and Vitabile posting a time of 1:46:27.
Gadjzisz also collected a win in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:02:33 and Roh took top honors in the 100-back (54.04).
Later on, freshman Logan Barns (Columbus, NJ / Northern Burlington) and junior Joseph Dunn(Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly with Barnes touching the wall at 2:04:88 and Dunn placing second in 2:07:28.
The men powered through the 400-yard freestyle relay. Dunn, sophomore Andrew Nesbitt (Somerset, NJ/St. Joseph’s), senior Brett Pedersen (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), and Vitabile posted the fastest finish at 3:13:61.
Nesbitt had a big meet as he also took the blue ribbon in the 100-breaststroke (1:00.60) and 200-breast (2:16.60).
The Lions return to dual meet action next Friday, October 24th in their home opener against Montclair State University at 5:00 p.m. in TCNJ’s Aquatic Center.
