Pitt Dominates on Opening Night of Homecoming Weekend

The Pitt Panther men and women easily handled Saint Bonaventure in a dual meet Friday.

Both teams won decisively to open up their homecoming weekend, with the men scoring a victory by a score of 157-80, while the women won by a score of 166-70.

It was a strong showing for both squads. The Pitt women swept the 400 medley relay, and neither the women or men looked back. Pitt won all but two races, the men’s 100 free and women’s 200 free, and took the top two spots in 19 out of 26 events, a dominant performance considering Pitt did not swim their A line up.

Men:

the Pitt B team of Joey Notarianni, Connor O’Prey, Martin Vogel, and Sean Heiden won the 400 medley relay after a disqualification from the A relay. Heiden Split 45.68 to anchor the winning relay.

Notarianni and his teams Jacob Tovey and Andrew McCarthy then swept the 1000 freestyle. Notarianni came in at 9:39.33, Tovey at 9:41.37, and McCarthy completed the sweep with a 10:04.09.

The story was the same for much of the meet.

Jon Lierly and Spence Gray took one and two in the 200 in 1:41.96 and 1:42.42.

The Bonnies did give Pitt a run in the 50. Saint Bonaventure’s Michael Pilyugin was edged out Heiden,  by just .01. Heiden was 20.86.

Another Pitt one two finish came from Zach Lierley and Vogel in the 400 IM, and then following the diving break, Kourosh Ahani, Vogel, and Jon Lierly swept the 100 fly, with Ahani winning with a 48.79.

Viacheslav Shchukin won the 100 freestyle for the Bonnies, and did so by more than a second, beating out Pitt’s David Sweeney.  Shchukin 44.60 compared to 45.68 from Sweeney.

Pitt swept the 100 back, but the Bonnies managed a second place from Vatslav Lets in the 500 free.

Saint Bonaventure would have been second in the 100 breast as well, although Pitt was swimming exhibition at that point. Pitt’s Luke Nosbich won in 57.10 followed by the Bonnies’ Preston Schilling.

The team of Sweeney, Heiden, Avery Warrinton, and Ahani Kourosh closed out the meet with a 200 free relay victory coming in at 1:23.11.

Women:

The women’s half of the meet went the same way the men’s did for Pitt, starting with a sweep of the 400 medley relay, the Panthers kept rolling.

Kaleigh Ritter won the 1000 for Pitt in 10:16.23, followed by her teammate Dani des Tombe in 10:18.13.

Saint Bonaventure got their only win in the 200 freestyle. Freshman Tanja Kirmse took the victory in 1:53.47, followed Pitt’s Bethany DeWitt in 1:53.74.

Pitt then swept the 50 free, with Melissa Pocsai leading the way in 23.53, followed by Danyel Johnson in 23.57, Emily Murphy in 23.86, and Jessica Nederlanden, as an exhibition swimmer,  in 24.18.
