D1 Buckeyes too strong for D3 champion Lords

Division 3 champions Kenyon made the quick trip to Columbus to face Division 1 Ohio State at McCorkle Natatorium. Ohio State continued their strong start to the season, beating the visitors from Kenyon 163.5 – 115.5.

Ohio State started out the meet with a sweep of the top three spots in the opening 200 medley relay. The ‘A’ team of Steven Zimmerman, DJ MacDonald, Matt McHugh, and Josh Fleagle took the top spot with a time of 1:29.17.

In the 1,000 yard freestyle, the Ohio State freshman Braden Seal took the win with a time of 9:20.60, just beating out teammate Jovan Mitrovic. There was a tie for third, with Arthur Conover from Kenyon – 3rd in the 500 free, and 1,650 in last seasons D3 championships – touching in an impressive 9:35.85 along with Joey Long from Ohio State.

Buckeye junior Fleagle took wins in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, posting times of 20.30 and 44.33 respectively. Kenyon sophomore Austin Pu touched in 21.12 for a solid third place result. In the 100 freestyle, Percy Gates of Kenyon posted a time of 46.99, also for a third place finish.

After taking victories in 11 events – sweeping the top three spots in many – the Buckeyes closed the meet out in exhibition mode.

Kenyon then took wins in the 100 butterfly, with Christian Josephson posting a 51.65. Kenyon sophomore Trevor Manz won the 200 IM in 1:55.41, and the Lords claimed the top spot in the 400 free relay with Joey Duronio, Gates, Wes Manz, and Pu touching in 3:07.12

Diving was a continued exhibition event for the Buckeyes, allowing Derek Hoare from Kenyon to take first in both the 1-meter (234.75) and 3-meter (290.93) events. Health Carmichael from Kenyon took second in both events.

The 2014 D3 champions didn’t have much time to rest after testing themselves against one of the nation’s best DI programs. Kenyon would head immediately home to Gambier, OH to face D3 foe Ohio Northern University the following evening.

Ohio State, now 3-0 on the season, will welcome Princeton and Denison to McCorkie Natatorium when they host a two-day double dual meet on November 7-8.
