Miami RedHawks Top Cleveland State in I-71 Battle

Oxford, OH, November 1, 2014 – The Miami University RedHawk Men played host to the Vikings of Cleveland State University (CSU) at Nixon Aquatic Center today.  Both Miami and CSU are coming off recent losses to Purdue and Ohio State University, respectively, but it was Miami who came out on top today, winning over the Vikings 120.5 to 108.5.

Leading the way for Miami University, was sophomore Bryan McNamara who logged two individual wins for the RedHawks.  First was his 9:49.66 swim in the 1000 freestyle event, followed by victory in the 500 freestyle distance with a winning time of 4:44.59. In the fourth-to-last event of the meet, which was that 500 free, a 1-2-3 finish from Miami really cemented this meet.

However, CSU had a multiple event winner on its side as well, in the form of sophomore, Gage Alleman.  The Louisiana native earned the first victory for the Vikings by clocking a 1:55.76 winning time in the 200I IM.  Alleman followed that up with wins in the 200 butterfly (1:56.58) and the 200 breaststroke (2:10.04).

Lighting up the sprint freestyle events were RedHawk senior Joe Baumgartner, who won the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.95, along with freshman teammate Ross Westwick who tied with CSU sophomore Robert Tolson at 47.32 for first in the 100 freestyle.

The meet was not quite as close as the final score indicated; the Miami men exhibitioned the 1-meter diving event, the 400 free relay, and a runner-up finish from Matthew Rigali in the men’s 200 yard breaststroke. All-told, though, the final score was a pretty close indicator of how close the two were in swimming – Miami earned a huge edge with four divers entered on the 3-meter event early in the meet to Cleveland State’s one.

The Miami University RedHawks are back in action on December 4th, as they host the yearly Miami Invitational at Nixon Aquatic Center.  The Cleveland State University Vikings will travel to St. Bonaventure on November 8th.
