Tennessee Vols take 4 of 6 weekly SEC Awards

It was a good week for Tennessee in the SEC Weekly Awards department, as the Vols took home 4 of the 6 honors.

Breaststroker Molly Hannis led the way, earning women’s swimmer of the week honors after winning three races in a tight battle with Auburn and Louisville. Hannis was fast in both her individual races, going 1:00.31 in the 100 breast and 2:10.23 in the 200 breast. She also competed on Tennessee’s winning medley relay as the Vols beat Louisville and tied Auburn.

The Vols swept the freshmen of the week awards. Sam McHugh was Male Freshman of the Week after winning two grueling races against Louisville and Auburn. McHugh took the 200 fly (1:45.82) and 500 free (4:26.73) for the Vols, and also swam the 200 IM individually. Meanwhile on the women’s side, Micah Bohon rose to the top of the conference awards, swimming a key leg on Tennessee’s 200 free relay that forced a tie with Auburn. The Vols needed to get first and third, and Bohon, typically a breaststroker/IMer, filled in on the free leg of the B team, going 23.45 to help the team get third and tie up the meet.

Also winning for Tennessee was junior diver Maurico Robles, who won on 1-meter and took second on 3-meter, getting over 400 points on 3-meter for the third consecutive meet.

Male Swimmer of the Week went to Auburn’s Joe Patching. He won the 200 IM, 200 back and 200 free against Tennessee and Louisville, with his 200 IM time of 1:46.60 rising to second in the nation so far this year. He was also 1:44.02 in the backstroke and 1:37.16 in the free.

LSU took home Female Diver of the Week honors thanks to Alex Bettridge, the senior who swept both diving events against Incarnate Word. This is the second consecutive week that Bettridge has swept diving for LSU.
