Canada West Championships: UBC Takes Lead After Day Two

The 2014 Canada West Championships began in Lethbridge, Alberta Friday night. Due to problems with the results, the day one recap is posted below following the day two recap.

DAY TWO

Day two of the Canada West Championships began with a win by Manitoba’s Kimberly Moors in the 50m freestyle. Moors swam a 25.62 to top Rebecca Terejko and Amanda Reason, both UBC swimmers, as they clocked in at 25.70 and 25.73 respectively.

In the men’s 50m freestyle it was a 1-2-3 finish for UBC as Alex Loginov led the way with a 22.22 performance. Second to Loginov was Luke Peddie who threw down a 22.39 to narrowly out-touch teammate Yuri Kisil who grabbed the bronze in 22.40.

Erika Seltereich-Hodgson, who already had a relay gold from the night before, showed her dominance in her main event, the 400m IM, as she touched the wall in 4:40.37 to win over teammate Tera Van Beilen. Van Beilen, known for her breaststroke, wasn’t far behind in 4:42.77 holding off Calgary’s Tianna Rissling who rounded out the top three with a 4:43.36.

Tristan Cote and Luke Reilly battled it out in the men’s 400m IM, but just like in the colleges cup meet it was Cote who took home a win, finishing the race in 4:15.54. Reilly was over five seconds behind Cote in 4:21.10 with UBC’s Jonathan Brown not far behind him in 4:22.27.

Jacomie Strydom came home with another win after winning the 50m fly on night one as the touched in at 59.63 to be the only swimmer under one-minute in the 100m fly final. Second was Rachael Grothe from Calgary in 1:01.43 followed by Chelsea Shaul in 1:02.02.

The men’s 100m fly final went to UBC’s Coleman Allen in 51.87 as he had a huge lead over teammate Justin Chan. Chan finished in 54.35 well behind Allen followed by Josiah Binnema of Alberta in 54.93.

Heading over to the 200m backstroke, Erika Seltenriech-Hodgson was able to come away with another win clocking in at 2:11.51. Stefanie Schmidt of Calgary was just four one-hundredths shy of that time in 2:11.51. Savannah King of UBC finished well behind the two leaders in 2:16.31, a time which was good enough for third.

Joe Byram of Alberta won the men’s 200m backstroke in 1:58.14, holding off all advances from UBC’s Yuri Kisil. Kisil, usually known for his sprint freestyle swims, threw down a decent 200m backstroke time of 1:58.27 to finish second.

The women’s 100m breaststroke featured another showdown between Fiona Doyle and Tera Van Beilen, and once again Doyle was able to come out on top. After winning the 50m breaststroke in a new Canada West record on night one Doyle swam a 1:07.34 to win the final tonight. Doyle was followed by UBC’s Erin Stamp in 1:07.51 and Van Beilen in 1:07.52.

Sergey Holson of UBC won the men’s 100m breaststroke in 1:00.18 with Nick Kostiuk of Alberta trailing him. Kostiuk was a 1:01.26 to take home the silver.

Savannah King added another win after her 800m freestyle victory from night one, showing her talent in the shorter distances and winning the 200m freestyle. King’s time of 1:59.36 was good for hold and beat her teammate Fionnuala Pierse who finished second in 2:00.09. Maia Brundage solidified the 1-2-3 UBC finish with a 2:01.30 which was good for third place.

Keegan Zanatta dropped down to the 200 after an impressive 1500m freestyle win on night one, taking the event in a time of 1:47.70. He had his hands full with teammate Coleman Allen who swam a 1:47.79. Keeping the race close was Stefan Milosevic who touched in at 1:48.06 to make it a 1-2-3 finish for UBC. All three of those swimmers were part of the gold medal winning 800 free relay from night one.

The 400 freestyle relays commenced after that and it was UBC who took both the men’s and women’s titles. In the women’s race, they beat rivals Calgary 3:44.43 to 3:50.25. In the men’s, they won by a similar differential touching in at 3:18.75 as opposed to the 3:23.31 Calgary swam.

After two days of competition, UBC led in both the men’s and women’s categories.

DAY ONE

The Canada West Championships held in Lethbridge Alberta kicked off this Friday highlighting some of the best swimmers in the conference which includes two of the top teams: the UBC Thunderbirds and the University of Calgary Dinos.

Day one started with a 50m fly win by Jacomie Strydom of UBC. Strydom touched in at 27.39 for the win over Kemberly Moors who grabbed silver behind her in 27.60. Clocking in at 28.35 for the bronze was Rachael Grothe of the University of Calgary.

Luke Peddie of UBC took to the water in the men’s 50m fly grabbing a second win for UBC with a tiume of 24.23. Dillon Perron squeezed in for the silver in 24.73 edging out Alberta’s Josiah Binnema who rounded out the top three with a swift 24.87.

UBC continued their dominance as Sarah McLean rocked a 29.13 in the 50m backstroke final to finish first ahead of the University of Alberta’s Camille Barr who touched in at 29.50. Third was Mackenzie Summers of UBC in 29.56.

The men’s 50m backstroke featured three swimmers from the province of Alberta getting on the podium as the University of Alberta’s Joe Byram put up a 25.58 for gold. Finishing second was Calgary’s Josh Dow, who swam a 25.87. His teammate Chris Courtis was just slightly behind him as he touched in at 25.89 for a third place finish.

Heading over to the women’s 50m breaststroke it was another matchup between UBC’s Tera Van Beilen and Calgary’s Fiona Doyle. Doyle stole the show with a 31.04 performance which broke the Canada West record set by Tera Van Beilen in prelims. Van Beilen settled for silver in 31.06 followed by teammate Rebecca Terejko who clocked in at 31.19.

Sergey Holson of UBC won the men’s 50m breaststroke in a time of 27.73, taking down Alberta’s Nick Kostiuk in a tough battle. Kostiuk ended up finishing second with a time of 27.97 with 50m fly silver medallist Dillon Perron grabbing third with a time of 28.31.

Following the sprints, the women took to the blocks for the 800m freestyle where Canadian national team member Savannah King took home a comfortable win with a time of 8:40.18. Stefanie Schmidt of Calgary finished second in 8:52.09 with Maia Brundage of UBC finishing third.

The men’s 1500m freestyle featured a great dual between last year’s 400m freestyle CIS Champion: Keegan Zanatta, and Tristan Cote of Calgary who won the 1500m freestyle at the CIS Championships last season. Zanatta, a recent UBC transfer from Victoria, came out on top with a time of 15:17.29 followed by cote in 15:27.12.

With all the individual events wrapped up, the women’s 800m freestyle relay kicked off and with it brought another win for the UBC women. The team of Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson, Fionnuala Pierse, Tera Van Beilen, and Savannah King put up a 8:00.34 to beat their rivals Calgary by over 15 seconds.

The UBC men put on a similar effort as Coleman Allen, Stefan Milosevic, Keegan Zanatta, and Yuri Kisil put together a 7:14.82 to claim gold. Calgary finished second with a stellar team of Tristan Cote, Sterling King, Wyatt Yarish, and Bogdan Knezevic putting up a time of 7:23.55. The University of Alberta wasn’t far behind in 7:23.94.

Mitch Benkic no where to be seen in the 200 back. Poor predictions earlier on in the year about the backstroke events.
