Lindsay Stone Leads Pittsford to New York High School State Championship

Last weekend, the girls from Pittsford High School won 5 events at the 2014 NYSPHAA Swimming and Diving State Championships last week. Sophomore Lindsay Stone led her team to the state title with individual victories in the individual 200 and 500 freestyles, along with the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Long Beach sophomore Margaret Aroesty also doubled up, winning both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

The meet kicked off with the girls 200 medley relay, where the team of Grace Chen, Lauren Michelsen, Megan Palmer, and Suhan Mestha from Fairpoint just missed the state record of 1:46.16 from 2006 with their winning time of 1:46.32.

Lindsay Stone added her first victory of the night with a time of 1:48.89 in the 200 freestyle. Cara Treble was the top qualifier after prelims, posting an early time of 1:49.40. She was just shy of breaking 1:50 in finals to finish second.

Margaret Aroesty ran away with the 200 IM, winning the event with a time of 2:00.77. That was almost a three second drop from her prelim swim.

Pittsford’s Katie Smith just missed her state record from last year of 23.05 with her winning time of 23.08. Andrea Ernst finished second as the only other sprinter to break 24 with a time of 23.41.

Following the diving break, senior Paige Kaplan touched the wall at 55.53 to win the women’s 100 butterfly. She had a very close race with Samantha Suer, who finished second with a 55.57.

Andrea Ernst was able to get her hands on the wall to win the the 100 freestyle after finishing second in the 50. She posted a 50.88 and was the only swimmer to break 51 seconds.

Lindsay Stone added her second individual of the meet with a time of 4:48.86 in the 500 freestyle. That set up a quick turnaround before her 200 freestyle relay, where she was the third leg of the winning relay. The Pittsford team of Becca Evans, Emma Corby, Lindsay Stone, and Katie Smith won in a new state record time of 1:34.73. They set the previous state record during prelims at 1:34.05.

Casey Gavigan pulled ahead to win the girls 100 backstroke with her time of 55.16.

Margaret Aroesty picked up her second individual victory of the meet, reaching for the wall in the 100 breaststroke with a new record time of 1:02.19. She won the 200 IM earlier in the meet.

The relay team from Pittsford of Lindsay Stone, Emma Corby, Becca Evans, and Katie Smith won the final event of the day with a time of 3:28.36. That event secured the team victory for Pittsford finishing with a total of 279 points. Bellmore-Merrick finished second at 217, and Orchard Park finished third with a total score of 179.
