Katinka Hosszu Strikes Back, Breaks World Record in Women’s 100 Backstroke

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu, after losing a World Record on Wednesday to Mireia Belmonte, broke a new one on Thursday in the women’s 100 backstroke. She swam a 55.03 in finals at the 2014 World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar to break the old record of 55.23 done by Shiho Sakai in 2009.

Comparative splits:

  • Hosszu 26.93/28.10 – 55.03
  • Sakai 26.73/28.50 – 55.23

Hoszu’s previous best in this event was a 55.34 that she swam at the Hong Kong stop of the World Cup in September of this year. The manner by which she’s simply willed herself into a backstroker in 2014 is incredible. She swam the 100 back at six out of eight World Cup stops in 2013, but was only a 57.04. In 2014, she beat that 10 times even before Worlds.
